Steal Marner

Created by: flyers123455
Team: 2019-20 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2019
Published: Feb. 11, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs can't match this offer sheet. Could go as high as 12.5M if you wanted and still be fine with the cap. They won't be able to get rid of Marleau and trading Nylander still doesn't get you enough space to match.

You'll have to give Toronto four 1st round picks for an offer sheet, and this is assuming Marner would even sign it (which he has stated he won't do).

Offersheets are not happening for a reason.. why would he choose to go to a team like Philly?

yeah I'm not sure....2 years from now Philly is a cup contender. Not sure why he wouldn't want to go there, get paid more and have the same chances at winning a cup...

Not the point of the post, but Miller is taking under market value and a backup role because he wants to be with his wife (an actress) and kids. He won't be coming east.

I think we would rather sign Talbot for that price since he is already Hart's mentor.

I still think Toronto would match though. You don't let a player like Marner leave, especially for 4 1sts that likely won't be that great.

He is Toronto grown man who is going to be life long Leaf. Id does not mean Philly is bad or would be bad, it means that he would not leave his childhood team for less money (because endorsements)..

I think it means he's just like Pajama Boy. Marner grew up a Leafs fans and has stated he doesn't have intentions of signing an offer sheet. I don't think it was a slight on Philly, just that he won't choose anywhere but Toronto to provide his services.

Marner is worth four late firsts. Also, how many more million would it take for you to go back on previous comments. Leafs can't offer him more than 10M.

I agree I think they would try to find a way to match but short of blowing up other parts of the team, there are too many NMC and untradable players to get past it. That's also why maybe you go to $12.5 to make it even more difficult to match. Flyers tried to do this with Weber and it almost worked. Homer can't help himself.

I dunno if it would really be in the leafs best interest to match at that price given the way their cap is structured. Marner is awesome, but I'm not sure if he is better than 4 firsts (what they could turn into or what they could be packaged up with for a trade) and using the money the leafs woulda budgetted for him to go and sign a Stone/Duchene.

Anyways, I doubt it happens, and like many have posted Marner probably signs a bridge that keeps the aav under/close to 10M and everyone is relatively happy

They can't as it stands, but I don't think they'll have too much of an issue moving guys like Brown, Zaitsev, Hyman, and maybe even Kapanen and Kadri if they have to.

I think Marner is worth it if he proved he can be a center, but personally I wouldn't do that as a RW. Philly probably wouldn't care since you already have Couturier and Patrick with Frost coming up.

Marner still has to sign the offer sheet.

He probably would take a bit of a haircut ($1M per year) to play for TOR, which has a much stronger foundational roster. Oh, and he's from Markham, Ontario.

Would think that he's only signing the craziest of crazy offer sheet tickets to leave TOR.

Agreed with all of that, except maybe trading Kadri. I really hope that never happens. He's on a good contract and brings something to the leafs that no one else really does.. if anything, I think we need more guys like Kadri.

I agree completely. I can't see it actually happening, he's one of the Leafs best contract IMO, but I only mention him since he has a cap hit higher than $1M and if the Leafs absolutely HAD to move him in order to sign Marner (which is very unlikely), I think they would.

Did the flyers try that with Weber? I didn't know that.

I keep hearing that the offer sheet might become relavant this year, and we all get a sense of the corresponding fan anxiety that goes with it on this site. And I know I'm in the minority here, but I hope there are a bunch of Os's this year. Granted, they will more likely be targetted at guys like Kappy (who I would also hate to lose), but maybe some team does takes a swing at a Marner, or a Point?? I don;t know, I think it adds a real element of drama..

I mean, and this isn;t really comparable, but I think about what the Flyers handed out for Lindros... Lindros was a dominate beast in his prime, and there will probably never, ever be another guy like him.. ever again. But with the benefit of hindsight, was Lindros worth all that? Cause Forsberg and a whole lot else went the other way, right? Is Marner worth 12M a year, plus 4 firsts? Why wouldn't the flyers sign Duchene or Stone themselves and keep their 4 firsts?

he said he wasn't going to sign any offer sheets because he wants to stay in Toronto. He grew up just outside of there, and they are a cup contender now and possibly for years to come with Marner, Matthews, and Tavares just to name a few.
