Gagner isnt even an NHL player right now. How does this help?

I'd do the NYI trade in a heartbeat but the other two I would not even consider personally

Kuznetsov can score more goals on the rush if he plays wing. If there's a cheaper perennial 40 pt center available, get them instead.

Edit: the only potentially better option I see for a cap-strapped team doesn't play in the NHL either, and is eleven years older: Pavel Datsyuk.

You and Gagner tears of joy

I don’t have anything against Gagner in theory, but I wonder if this same idea could be accomplished with only the other two trades and playing Boyd at center with Kuzy? Save a little cap space and keep Jaskin?

https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/why-sam-gagner-still-makes-some-sense-today-for-the-edmonton-oilers

Gagner has weak skating, but has ten seasons of 30 pts, seven over 40, and hit 50 two years ago in Columbus. Jaskin is tougher, faster, better at languages, and four years younger, but has a career high of 18 points per season, but if he can stay in the lineup he's on pace for 19 this year, thanks to a great team and great linemates.

I think they should spend the extra 400k and try to help Gagner break his career high, instead, because that could be a good deal on thirty more points. If they're playing 6-7 games anyway, they might as well win them.

Edit: the financial logic gets a lot stronger if Jaskin files for arbitration. If he's 2M next year, I think they could be happier paying 1.575M for someone with hands.
