I honestly like both of these trades.

Spooner trade is fair value for both teams. Hudon can contribute on Edmonton's bottom 6 well.
Martinez for a 2nd + Fleury seems like good value for both teams. Maybe in Montreal's favor, but you never know.

Particularly like the first one. Gives a second start to Hudon and clears salary for EDM while providing assets to MTL. Will see this summer if we buy out Spooner or not... nice job.
I'm not really sold on Martinez though, I wouldn't make any other change to the habs line-up this year and develop through the draft. We never know, maybe this summer the habs sign Jimmy Schuldt out of St-Cloud along with Poehling and all of the sudden, we have a great top 4 in the making with Brook making the jump to the AHL/NHL next year.

I love the Spooner idea! Not sure they'd do it though because 3.1M (minus what Hudon will cost) for one more season isn't the type of contracts they should be paying the piper on. Its not like they need that extra approx 2.5m in cap on any of there current RFA's and any meaningful UFA will cost quite a bit more too....

Lucic, Russell, Sekera are the ones they need to figure out more than Spooner IMO.

Also I wouldn't trade that 2nd to LAK afterwards If Im MTL. Use MTL's or CLB's. Edm's is going to be a late 30's pick probably. Some real gems to be had so try and keep that one.

But I like the structures of both trades!

Thanks for the input guys. The reason I liked spooner is because he has no sort of ntc whatsoever and edm could really use any alleviation being right up against the cap and on top of that he isn't even playing on the team. Plus it'd be great if hudon could be traded to a team that couldn't help but give him a legitimate shot to play.
Reason I like martinez is he is a solid lefty with a 4 mill salary and 3 years left. He won't cost the farm considering what the leafs paid for muzzin and muzzin is younger and overall the better dman. Reason why I think he'd be a great fit in mtl? Petry. Meaning I'm a big fan of petry, great team guy, puts up points and likes it in mtl. Problem though is he has always been a minus player, reason for that I think is he needs a reliable veteran guy to play to his left. Give him that and watch him flourish even more than he already has.

I like these trades, make a lot of sense. I agree that for Edmonton the Lucic and Russell contracts are their biggest issues but the Spooner contract may be the one they are most able to move, and their cap issues are immediate as well as long term. I think Spooner could find his form again in Montreal under Julien, but if he doesn't they can waive him and bury him in Laval - he'll come with his cap hit but only for one season, but that would be worth the 2nd. If he finds himself in the offseason and demonstrates he has value to some team next season but doesn't quite make the Habs, maybe he,d be claimed on waivers and free the Habs of that cap commitment. Otherwise he can be a leader in Laval, which that team needs to help groom the prospects there.
