Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pens offersheet Kasperi Kapanen 5 years @ $4,059,323. Cap hit is high enough that they don't want to match, compensation exactly rises from 2nd round to 1st & 3rd which is more attractive to Leafs, giving them more incentive not to match. GMJR also offers TML Maatta in a trade in a side deal.

honestly, I would wait till they make him an offer and see what happens.
Don't want to do them no favors giving them a low ball on him if he is demanding more and a trade.

Why does Toronto let KK go and the trade for Maatta for the same cap hit???

Yeah that’s a big no from Edmonton. We’ve already got too many overpaid left hand dmen. In fact, we’d love to get rid of Sekera or Russell, since we’ve already got Klefbom and Nurse on the left side...

Pens have enough dead cap space that can't be traded in Tanner and Johnson without worrying about Kapanen. And as suggested by Riley above, why would the Leafs trade four assets (including Kapanen) just to obtain an unneeded Olli?

The website has an offersheet calculator that no one seems capable of using.

Total money is spread over 5 years, so your compensation is off. Kapanen would never sign for such long term at that money anyways and if he was dumb enough to do so, Toronto would happily match

Dude Gardiner will get at least 6 x 6 on the open market, And your offer sheet compensation is off by a country mile it's based on 5 years not 7 years.

I just used Edmonton as a placeholder because they have the dumbest ownership in the NHL. Could be any team.

Okay, I put $5.5M. You're probably right that it's more like $6M but $500K isn't exactly off that much. Regardless, Toronto should NOT let him go. Hopefully the fans haven't chased him out of town.

For compensation; Whether I put 5 years or 7 years, it stays the same on CapFriendly's calculator. I could be misunderstanding how it works. What's the rate for 7 years with 1st & 3rd compensation.

Yeah, I'm confused. I looked up on the Offer Sheet Calculator. It says AAV: $4,059,323 - $6,088,980, therefore compensation is a 1st & 3rd. So you're telling me that the max is 5 years? That's ok. Am I wrong about how the AAV works? On my roster it shows Kapanen with a cap hit of $4,059,323, so pretend it says 5 years, not 7.

Also, I agree Toronto *should* match that but for all the nonsense about teams supposedly offer sheeting Marner (they won't) I think after Marner, Johnsson and (hopefully) Gardiner, Kapanen could be the odd man out, possibly hold out unless he's dumb enough to sign for a low AAV.

Now GMJR is old school and I don't think he'd ever offer-sheet someone but he is creative enough where he could trade for Kapanen, starting with what would be compensation plus another cost-controlled prospect.

Well now that Olli is out for a month with ANOTHER shoulder injury, that really shoots that that idea down.

The idea surrounding Olli Maatta is on the theory that they may need to shed Brown (although if they were to trade Kapanen, that's likely not a necessity anymore) and the idea that Gardiner may not return, Maatta for all his warts is a young defenceman, signed for a few more years at ~$4M, capable of playing in the middle pair.

This roster is a mixed bag of a few angles concerning dealings between the Leafs & Pens. Any of which *could* happen but on this roster *all* of them are happening even though one deal would negate the necessity of the others.

This roster theorizes Gardiner leaving Toronto (sick of fans), so the Leafs are feeling it's more important to spend $4M on a defenceman, with term, capable of playing middle pair minutes over a forward on a team stacked with forwards.

out of curiosity, does anyone know if the compensation levels for offer sheeting adjusts along with the cap increase?

Gardiner and Hainsey aren't returning and the Leafs have to lose their 7m in order to sign their RFA next year. Leafs at LHD is solid even next year. Reilly, Dermot, maybe Muzzin if plays the left side and Leaf s are hoping AHLer Rosen who has been very good this year is in the NHL next year.
