I like Fehr, but to only save 100,000 for a rental player that probably is just about the same as Jaskin isn't worth it. Jaskin is probably the best 4th line player the caps have right now (although he keeps getting scratched for no good reason). Jaskin is also set to be an RFA, so if we really want to get rid of him, just move him at the draft. I'd prefer to see Boyd (who doesnt belong in the NHL right now due to his defense) or DSP out (he really inst that good).
I really like Boyd and Smith-Pelly. When they're on, they're on par with most teams' first liners, in terms of assists and goals, respectively. DSP has been filling in on the Caps' 2nd PK unit since Beagle left. He's not Beagle, but he's not awful. Fehr isn't Beagle either, but could help share the load on PK.
Jaskin is a good energy player, but Fehr has become a faceoff specialist/PK specialist. The Caps can call up O'Brien, Siegenthaler, or Lewington if they need hits, once the playoffs start, but Wilson and Orpik each put up more than 80 hits last postseason, each finishing among the top twenty all time. Jaskin was a good pickup when Wilson was out for a while, but right now he doesn't address as many apparent team needs as Fehr. Fehr also has more goals, 5 to 2.
Could the Caps still look to add checking by trading Burakovsky for Coyle, Schenn or Zadorov? Sure. Could they trade Jaskin and a higher pick for Glendening instead of Fehr? Yes. But that leaves them with one less high pick to trade for a big splash.
