Big Decision Offseason

Created by: ClockReads2113
Team: 2019-20 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 13, 2019
Published: Feb. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Caps can't re-sign Holtby and they can't let him walk for free which means they should trade him in the offseason for a nice return that can help the future.

Caps have like 3958203958 dmen that need playing time so Niskanen and Bowey are expendable.

Stone is the next Hossa. Just a complete beast at both ends of the ice. He'll be elite for years to come which allows Caps to keep the window open longer.

I know it's a gamble to go with this goaltending, but Caps are at a point where they need to take gambles if they want to stay competitive. If for some reason they can't get a good duo from Samsonov/Vanecek/Copley, they can find a vet to stablize it.

If goaltending works out this team would wreck people for while. Look at that top 9.

  1. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
Holtby can go anywhere, but figured CGY might be interested in Holtby since they are in a win now mode. Rittich has been good but this puts them over the top. If not to CGY he can go wherever for a similar package.

ANA GM spoke about how they need to get youth and speed, well Stephenson brings both.

Bowey, Burakovsky, Barber, Walker, all will prob not be property of the Caps then.
i love the idea of getting Stone...but lines could look more like:
    Ovi - Kuzy - Willy
    Vrana - Backie - Stone
    Gersich - Eller - Oshie
Stephenson - Boyd - Kody Clark (another Willy in the making)

    Kempny - Carly
    Orlov - Siegenthaler
    Johansen - DJoos
    Lewington

    Samsonov
Copley or any other serviceable backup on the cheap.

You could honestly get stone for way less. Like 8-8.25m a year. If not shoot for Hayes for 5-6 or brassard for 3.5-4m.

    I’d keep Stephenson

I don’t think Holtby gets that much unless there’s an extension or make the 2nd conditional to him resigning. Something like that. I don’t think the value is way off just make the 2nd conditional.

    100% agree with nisk trade

And tml fans think bowey for brown would be fair and that would give us some more depth.

BTW your trades are very good on this view....Holtby trade works for both teams, so does Dallas trade, and ANA trade. WELL DONE!

would rather have more versatile harder working Brown than Bura long term....good idea there!

We definitely don't have to add him since we have so many d prospects that could play. But I figured we could at least try him. He'll be the most sought after Euro D UFA this summer. He's killing it in the Liiga league. He's big (6'3") but can skate, pass, and shoot. Figured we'd try him out. If he's anything like Pilut then it's definitely worth it.

Yeah I don't mind moving on from those guys. Though I'd hate to move on from Barber without giving him a chance in the NHL. Kid is a shooter and we need those. I love Bura still, but I understand if they move on. I doubt Clark will be NHL ready. It's hard enough for elite talent to make the jump from juniors to NHL, let a lone someone like Clark.

23-year old Finnish d-man. Great at puck-moving. Absolutely dominating the Finnish League. 41 points in 49 games. For a defenseman, that's extremely rare.

plus already established guys like Vrana, Djoos, AND veterans like Oshie, Backie, Willy....not to mention that Ovi guy who is maybe the greatest pure goal scorer in the history of hockey, and should be around 5-7 more years in some capacity to hopefully break the all time scoring record.

This build has a youth movement on defense(cutting 3 of the current top 7), in net (cutting 1/1), and on the penalty kill (cutting 4 of the current top 8, by minutes), in the same summer.

I don't think a lot of teams do that, all at once, and then expect to....what was it...."wreck people for a while?" Probably the other way around.

With the cap going up, won't the inflation all be spent again on top free agents? Stone might not be available at all, but he very likely won't be available at that already high price. Some idiot will see cap space, feel invincible, and sign him for 12.

    Who's Kaski?

Yeah I love the people who think we're screwed in the future.

The one thing the Caps need to do is get an elite forward talent in their prospect pool. It's easier said than done but they need to find another Kuznetsov. They are set in goal and defense for a long while, and even winger they look pretty good since Wilson and Vrana are young (hopefully Gersich, Barber, or someone else can take a 2nd line role), but they need one more forward piece. Preferably a center because they don't have any top 6 center prospects currently. There's an outside chance Pilon or Sutter could be but it's a long shot.

Definitely keep Stephenson. Also keep DSP. Then, sure, maybe a UFA to help out, if there's cap space. I like your reasonable approach. The top of the UFA market can blow up pretty quickly.

Maybe, though I think the reports out there are saying $11M for Breadman. But Stone is a year younger and plays a better 2 way game. But I'd take either.

Stephenson and DSP are not good hockey players. Caps have younger better talent that needs to play.

Stephenson has solid speed and upside but I can’t argue that we have younger talent that should be playing

If you want a more likely top six center than Stephenson or Boyd, MTL has a few, and has their top three C's locked down for a while. Not sure which ones they'd discuss, but why not start high? https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1040617

As for Stephenson, personally, whatever, but your departures above are on pace for over ten hours of SHTOI this year. Stephenson is on pace for 2 hrs at minimum wage. Dowd and Smith-Pelly aren't far behind. Nor is Stone, but for the price.... http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpenaltykill&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20182019&seasonTo=20182019&gameType=2&playerPlayedFor=team.15&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=shTimeOnIce

The Caps' PK is already bad, but above, it loses most of its experience. Backstrom and Wilson are going to end up playing big PK minutes and having less energy for offense. Same with Carlson. Samsonov's first year comes out really rough. If there isn't a lockout, the team gets a really high pick out of all this. If there is a lockout, they'll feel brilliant for trading Holtby while they could, but pretty silly for not trading Backstrom when Carolina fans wanted to offer Svechnikov for him in the fall.

Here's an even more generous offer from a CGY fan who's offering Rittich, Kylington, and picks. https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/201923 Rittich is no Dube, but he's a starting goalie in the NHL. https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/201923
