Alternatively, sign Kiselevich if Pilut is too tough to acquire.

Who is offering stone a max contract? The alternative is probably 10x6 which I’d also do

Term kills teams far more than AAV. Why not add a max contract while Pettersson is still on an ELC?

Benning has made more good moves than bad in my books. And in the words of Brian Burke thats what separates a good GM from the bad.

This^ is terrible.. The Buffalo trade?? Wtf. You sir should become an Oilers fan. Would have alot more to whine about.

Stone will get 9-10x7. I get that 12 mill a year is great but what happens if he gets a really bad injury or falls off for some reason. Hes taking guaranteed $

The fact that he’s a Benning fan should be your first clue that he’s an insider. I guess the second is that he’s paraphrasing Burke. sarcasm

As you know, this is exactly the sort of player the team needs - a mid 20s RFA defenseman that can play in the top 4 and not get bulldozed.

Terrible for who? Pilut has demonstrated that he could be an awesome PP defenseman, is that too much for him?

Yes he is, but that is a really good offer, IDK enough about the projected upside for Virtanen but Juolevi could be equally awesome and they were 6th and 5th over all picks. I love Pilut but this is an outstanding offer for a 1st year player.

Wow that is an excellent offer, I just wonder if Benning would give up that much for a player who has a 23 game NHL career.

I doubt Benning would, he’s not a former first round pick (Sbisa, Gudbranson, Schenn). We’ve seen how that goes.

Maybe it’s an overpayment but I’d rather err on the side of being too generous than being naive. Also, Pilut was the SEL top defenseman a year ago with HV71.

You’re right. Revised. He now makes 29.8 million over the next two seasons and is unresticted again at age 28 (or re-signs if the terms are agreeable to everyone). At some point money trumps term, surely.

Would you trade Virtanen and Juolevi for Parayko? Would St. Louis? No, of course they wouldn’t, because that’s what happens when a defenseman settles in as a #1, they become virtually untouchable (unless they are Dougie Hamilton, because museums?).

Yea, it would be tough for stone to decline an offer paying him 15 mill a season, even if its just for 2 seasons. Id say its fairly unrealistic because i havent really seen anything of the sort in hockey (in other sports its happened) but who knows, interesting compromise

The closest comparable I can think of in hockey is actually the Mats Sundin deal. Which could have gone horribly, but was not bad in principle. I think it only makes sense for the right player (elite) in the right age range (26/27) with the right team (enough ELCs, bad enough that they might need to overpay).
