As an outsider, I actually like the basic idea of Gardiner for TVR. Two years, cheap is better than one year, and walk. TVR plays less offense but so much more defense and he's a right shot, which the Leafs need. Prospects are going the wrong way, in terms of typical trade value, because Gardiner is just a heck of a puck mover, but it's not like the Hurricanes are giving up prospects to add a puck moving defenseman, when they've got Fleury and Bean on the way. so it comes down to a one for one if Carolina thinks the extra offense this year helps them make the playoffs.... or if they see a way to flip him and get a forward they want, whom they couldn't get for just TVR.... or extend him with a slight, undeserved raise, and then move him to his off side and make any of the dozens of Hamilton deals floating around here.
McQuaid, though, doesn't have term remaining and doesn't play as many minutes, as tough zone starts, or as much offense as the ghost of Ron Hainsey, who wants his spot back. Leafs fans are correct that he just isn't coming to Toronto before July.
