Created by: Tmclean64
Team: 2018-19 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2019
Published: Feb. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the lineup depleted for at least a few more weeks we trade Schaller for Manning. Similar salaries and term, Edm sheds 350k and gets a 4th line center or RW in exchange for the Defencmen. Trade helps both teams as Van is short on Dmen and Edm on Fwds.

Or the Canucks can simply claim Manning off the waiver wire and give up nothing to the Oilers.... except some cap space for next season.

True that. We should try and get something for Schaller, though... he didn't work out here.

Exactly.. If im Benning I dont want to take on the extra salary for next year nor do I want Edm gaining cap space. Schaller has become expendible and creates a roster spot for Gaudette perminantly. Manning might be a better look that Pouliot if he gets a chance who knows.. Then can either be buried or kept as a 7th dman next year.

What value does Schaller have? I dont think hes worth much if anything.

I think the dollars make sense more or less. However, I think it less likely that Schaller blocks any of the young players next year, but Manning might. On the left side, they have Hutton, will resign Edler and sign Hughes. Doesn't leave much room for Juolevi, Sautner or others.

I disagree. We need a placeholder for Juolevi next year and some of our other young dmen in utica right now who arent NHL ready more than we need one for the forward group. Manning can also just be waived for one of those guys next year if they prove to be ready, same as Schaller. I dont see Manning as a threat to any of our young kids ice time, he would provide competition for them to make them earn the spot.. Not have the spot handed to them the way Edm tried to rebuild.

I don’t disagree with your reasoning; however, it doesn’t address my issue with the trade. We already know that Green will sit Schaller instead of some of the younger players. We don’t know if he’ll do the same on defence. He took along time to trust Stecher and has been conservative in his deployment of the defence. My point is that it less likely that Schaller blocks a younger player than Manning.

I get what youre saying. You want Schaller to fill one of the press box seats so the young kids can play whether they are up or down. But come on do you really think Green is going to play Manning over Hughes? Pretty fair to say this will be our top 6 next year: Or some variation of it.
Edler - Tanev
Hutton - Stecher
Hughes - Gudbranson

To me Menning would be doing the exact same thing as Schaller, allowing our young LHD to get minutes in the AHL while Manning sits out. But he can also help us right now as were so banged up, we just sent down Brise and recalled Sautner.. Schaller is kind of a useless asset right now.

I don't think he will play Manning over Hughes, but I think if Manning is the 7th D, then less likelihood that Juolevi or someone else gets called up. To be honest, I don't really care about this year. I think the playoffs are a mirage.
