Sabres

Created by: Shakabakes
Team: 2018-19 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2019
Published: Feb. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moulson moved just to make the money work. Sabres get a player who can hold down the 2C spot for another year until Mittelstadt is ready. Rangers save $4.35M in Cap space next year, and get out Scandella's bad contract a year before they would get out of Smith. 5th Rounder to Buffalo is for taking that extra year (could potentially be a 4th). Scandella may be one of the few Defensemen that is a downgrade from Smith. Asplund for acquiring Namestnikov while taking on Moulson.

So let me get this straight, you want the sabres to take on more dead cap for longer and give up a prospect for a fifth round pick?

Sabres are also getting Namestnikov who's a nice young wing with talent. I would think the Sabres consider this. Moulson is a 1 year dump, Scandella is basically a 2 year dump with the way he's played. So Asplund for Namestnikov, Smith (a dump) and a 5th seems close to me.

And a Center to rotate in before Mittelstadt is fully ready to take the reins. I posted a while back about a similar trade scenario involving Smith, Vesey and Strome. While that proposal was considered mostly positive by many Sabre fans that responded, one detractor noted not only the increase in spending (taking on 3 players) but the need for a C going forward rather than a winger.

This trade involves less players (less Cap to take on) and the required Center with an extra year of control. Smith isn't great, but he has steadied himself a little better from the complete dumpster fire he was last year. Neither Scandella nor Moulson hold any value whatsoever that you would worry about losing. Sabres get the pick, and the one piece they give up isn't one of their elite Prospects.

Except that n Vlad has the same amount of points that Casey does and is really not valuable as a 2c to the sabres. Asplund can be the 3c to Jack and Casey. This trade doesn't help the sabres. One dumpster fire dman for another plus a discounted moulson for only the rest of this season. No need to dump moulson at this point. Also no need to take on more cap for no reason.

If the deal were just Asplund and Moulson for Namestnikov, would that be more ideal?

I may be stupid but I like this trade. Smith = Scandella while Smith is Right handed which helps Buffalo so this is a good move. Namestnikov has a 20 goal season in his resume, can he do that with Eichel? > Asplund has not adjusted to the AHL yet, 5th > Moulson.
As to the cap, Namestnikov term and cap is the same as Scandella, Smith is 2 years longer than Moulson not really a big issue in my mind.
Why would I not make this trade? Let's make a deal, I really like it. cheers
