apparently the Leafs are in on Hayes.... the only reason i fathom is to keep him from Boston, but is there more to it?

It's not a bad idea but if I were the Leafs, I would want picks back because of Kadri's term.

Nylander will never be a centre. He doesn't have the defensive skills to ever gain the trust of Babs. Heck he doesn't even trust Matthews.

Babcock isn't more than an ok coach. He is still riding on the coat-tails of Lidstrom.

Doesn't make the Leafs better than year, but it does clear 10m of cap space for next year. Admitting now a centre and RHD would have to be acquired to fill those two spots. From the Rangers view would you rather have 10m in cap space instead of Kadri and Zaitsev?

yes.......

and to a prior poster..... its a interesting decision for the NYR

take the picks/prospects you get for Hayes/McQuiad, and have ~$17M to spend (Karlsson/Duchene LOL)
or
no picks/prospects (or lesser values of each) have Kadri/Zaitsev, and then ~$8M in space (Duchene?)

the C UFA market is basically Hayes/Duchene; and the DEF UFA market is basically Karlsson , Myers, Gardiner

NYR pass a cap dump and a 3rd line vet for a 26 high top 6 center and a 3rd pairing defenceman that will fetch a 3rd for his ufa services. No gm would even consider that deal.
