Hagelin seems like a nice option for the 4th line at a relatively cheap price considering Boyle went for a 2nd round pick. I like this for both teams

This trade is fair, but I think turning Pearson to 3rd and a conditional 6th is kinda meh.

This isn't terrible. I think it helps Washington out with going down the lines depth wise.

Yeah it's not terrible. I just think they gave up on Pearson a bit too easily, could've got another 4th or 5th from Pens. But could've been worse for sure.

Good deal for both sides. Hagelin adds depth for the playoffs and could become a good scorer on the Caps. LA gets picks (or at least a pick) for a rental. It'll be weird seeing Hagelin on the Caps after playing against them in the playoffs 3 years in a row with Pittsburgh.

Edit: And he was with the Rangers the year before when they played the Caps in the 2nd round. They also played each other in 2012 and 2013. He's played a lot of playoffs against the Capitals, and now he's a Capital.

this immediately makes the caps pk better and adds speed to the bottom 6.... very low risk move that has pretty significant upside. this guy is a major reason the penguins won a cup.

Hagelin has been a pain in the ass for us for years. Even when he isn’t scoring he’s working on the forecheck and PK. I love his speed and I think he’ll be a great add to the fourth line. A massive upgrade to DSP, that’s for sure.

The asset management by LA is pretty poor. Pearson could’ve fetched a much larger return than this.

It's a good deal for the Caps because they get Hagelin for half price plus they get a player who knows the division and its players. It's a good move for the Kings because they get something for him in a 3rd round pick which is good because he's not worth anything higher than a 3rd at this point. The Kings may get the additional pick but that's just loose change at that point and sometimes loose change can turn into something very big if invested well.

Horrible trade for washington. Hags can't score. He's useless with the puck. There is no upside to his game, which is why the penguins dumped him.
Any hopes that he will score with washington is laughable. He couldn't score with Malkin and Kessel as line mates, there is no way he scores here.
He gets great opportunities but 0 ability to finish.
One expensive 4th liner.

he is getting half retained(plus the amount the pens are still paying as well), he wasn't a scorer he was a defense, pk type guy. If the caps traded for him expecting scoring they are stupid, if they traded for him for defense and leadership, its a good and low cost move for them. The pens traded Hagelin to shakeup the team and get somebody with more control, it wasn't cause he was a necessarily bad player. He wasn't worth 4m per year but for under 2 he is a very good player to have.

Why are people talking about Tanner Pearson? This has nothing to do with Pearson. I don't care what LA gave up to get Hagelin. That was months ago. The question is: is a 3rd and a conditional 6th enough for Hagelin? And does it make sense for the Capitals?

at the time they didn't want draft picks I guess, they were intent on competing so they hoped to help the team out for this season by trading for Hagelin. Also Pearson has played better in Pittsburgh than Pearson was playing in LA so the value Pittsburgh could get for him now isn't what the kings would have gotten if they kept him.

I don't get it. He's in Pittsburgh and does nothing, gets traded to LA, does even more of nothing. Then Washington pops up and goes 'hey! You know that fast player that's doing nothing, want a 3rd for him?'
What am I missing?
Good for LA getting something for him

The Caps like getting ex-Penguins.

Can't see why Washington makes this trade. They are getting a 4th line winger that didn't even do good while playing on the 4th line.
They only paid a 3rd + essentially a 5th, but I feel like there are better options than Hagelin for the 4th line.

This trade, or something like it, was written on the walls after the Caps waived Cup winner Devante Smith-Pelly yesterday.

Giving up a 3rd (and a 6th if they reach the conference finals) seems like a pretty reasonable trade-off for a player with the post-season resume of Hagelin.

Lucky for the Caps Smith-Pelly (who had a pretty good 2018 post-season) wasn’t claimed when he went thru waivers so the two could be together on an “energy” 4th line come playoff time.

Fair ask. Hagelin has speed, is an efficient penalty-killer, and has flashes of offence. Most notably he has performed well and upped his play when it’s mattered most - in the post-season. For a team with their backs against the Cap, they did well to add a bottom-6 winger/PKer. He could play little in the reg season but more in the post. Smith-Pelly can also be brought up for the post-season too as Cap issues don’t matter then too.

The penguins traded him because for 2 seasons he struggled to find the back of the net and he hasn't looked like the same player since he broke his ankle. In other words, he was a bad player.

not scoring =/= bad player.
not scoring+paid 4million+ufa after season=overpaid player
not scoring+still good defensively+half salary retained= fairly paid

His primary asset was never goal scoring even going back longer. When Kessel isn't scoring he is a bad player because that is his primary asset, If hagelin starts being bad at defense that is when he becomes a "bad player"

I don't think you get it. He was.
He wasn't putting up his numbers on the PK. Which had us middle of the pack. And the line he was on was still bleeding goals.

Like I said. He has not been the same player since breaking his ankle. My guess is he got plates in it.

That conditional 6th seemed like a lot of back and forth negotiating for a whole lot of nothing lol.

Decent deal for each.
