Trade his contract and he retires as a member of Chicago. Paperwork job..

Top-9 forward and 1st round pick is not worth of top-4 Dman? 1st round pick is very valuable.. or somehow Leafs 1st round pick isnt as valuable as other teams first for some weird reason? grin

Teams do favours to other teams all the time.. and because they would get good assets and right price paid for doing it. Also.. Marleau just provides help for team that has lower cap hit and they would basically receive assets for doing nothing just do the trade..

A top 4 D guy especially a right one is worth a late round 1st pick and Brown isn't exactly a guy to light the lamp...would be a 4th liner on the Hawks.

If the Hawks are going to go with Kane and Toews together, Brown might be perfect winger for DeBrincat-Strome duo or for Evan Barratt to help him establish. Might be a good addition to middle-6 department.

Although the trade is fair per se, I'm not sure the Hawks would be willing to do that as they are rumored to be making a big splash in free agency with all the cap space. The Hawks, being a top 3 revenue team, always go up pretty close to the cap because the fans demand they spend money. That said, the Hawks do need to reserve about $6M to $8M in cap space next year for signing Cat, Strome, Kahun and Gus the year after so it could be doable for that reason and with Boqvist and Mitchell coming up on the right d side and Seabs being unmovable, I could see the Hawks moving Murphy after the season or the following season in the expansion year.

Why does Chicago do it?? For a 2020 pick in the 60 range?? Ottawa is the only team that will be under the 2019-2020 floor as of right now.

No, the 2nd line of Kahun - Strome - Debrincat has been very solid...both Strome and Debrincat are playing on fire right now with Kahun...don't want to break that chemistry. Saad and Caggs will be the 3rd line pairing with hopefully Barratt in the center or if now Kampf. Our 4th line needs help on the wings as Perlini and Sikura aren't cutting it. The biggest needs up front are a 1st line LW and 4th line wingers.

See my comment above, that is the only reason why I could see Chicago doing it. You mean a 1st round pick in the 20s or 30s range. It may need to be a 2019 1st round pick.

I think he's arguing the opposite, that a 1st + is too much for him (I agree)

Arizona has been taking on unpaid cap for years, why not the Leafs?

Sammy, I think that's to big a price to pay for Murphy. Surely the Leafs can trade Marleau's cap to a team like Arizona at cheaper sweetener.

I don't think you can separate the trade into two parts. If Hawks are grabbing a 1st and 2nd rounder (should be 2019 and 2020) and Brown for Murphy and a cap hit in Marleau, I honestly think it's a pretty creative and fair trade.

Try OTT. I don't think Arizona is in a position to take on anymore cap dumps. They are under a lot of pressure to perform or they are going to lose the team and with Hossa's still on the books, doubt they take another one on.

I almost think it has to be Western Conference team, I wonder if any Eastern conference would lessened their playoffs chances. Marleau's cap hit is different than Hossa LTIR. Marleau's cap hit of 6.25m has to be within the 83m cap limit. Hossa (or any LTIR) is outside the 83m limit so in effect the Arizona has 88.25m in cap space if Hossa is included.

What I mean though is Arizona who has one of the lowest revenues, can't take on additional salary.

Marleau would have after July 1st like a million in salary maybe even less. Its cap that is the thing there.

But there is no salary....there is no money going to Marleau if he retires. It's just 6.5m in cap space. Similar to Datsyuk's trade to Arizona.
