Description

A potentially decent swap for both teams with problem contracts. Lucic has more term, Ryan has a higher cap hit. The Sens can afford to retain, but also to buyout Lucic which would be the reason Lucic agrees to the trade, with the promise of the buyout. Ryan agrees to this trade as a change of scenery, as well as a chance to play with McDavid.

It is an option, but in this scenario they can both do that and get comp for helping Edmonton out of their Lucic situation.

Considering that Ottawa is retaining on Ryan and taking on the horrendous Lucic buyout, a 3rd Round Pick, which is looking to be a late one at that, isn't much compensation when they could either a) keep playing Ryan, or b) just buy Ryan out.

If that was the 2019 2nd Round Pick, and/or there was a prospect involved, there's clearly much more incentive to make the move, but in either case, I don't know if Ottawa would want to be retaining. A pick and a prospect to free up a roster spot and still make the salary floor makes more sense to me.

Ottawa wants out of the Ryan deal as much as Edmonton wants out of the Lucic deal. Ottawa would be doing a buyout either way so why not get a pick, even a 3rd, for it. The retaining part isnt an issue as they need to hit the floor. Buying out Lucic would amount to less money than a Ryan buyout, it's just a longer contract by 1 year.
