Because he's also a pending UFA since any team would be crazy to qualify him at $3.25 million.

Then why would the Caps dump him for scraps, and then acquire a guy who's worse than Burakovsky?

They wouldn't. I was just explaining why Burakovsky and Hagelin are worth about the same return.

A) Playoff teams keep their UFAs

B) He just finished a streak of seven points in nine games, all at evens. That's a pace for 64 even strength points. Last year four NHL players had more than that, over the whole year. Everybody has ups and downs, but if he can occasionally play at a MacKinnon/Kopitar pace, then even though he also has a bunch of slow times, he's worth 3.25. Not much more. Better to sign 10M over three years, and avoid another 10% hike in 2021.

The Caps are certainly welcome to do that deal with him. He's just not going to be worth that much of a trade return at that price.

There just not Burakovsky has more points and is 6 years younger, you're delusional if you think he's worth the same as Hagelin

Hagelin has eight points this year, guy. Two goals and six assists. Four of them are secondary assists. He's basically retired.

Burakovsky just got seven points in nine games, up through last week. He's basically back to being a good young hockey player, who scores some goals and might keep improving.
