Capitalizing on a situation

Description
Ottawa will need almost 15 million to get to the cap floor next season so they will need to bring in some big contracts which allows opportunity for teams to dump cap. However, most big and unwanted contracts have NTCs and nobody is waiving for Ottawa. Allen has a rough cap-hit and no trade protection and this might be Army’s best shot at correcting his mistake. Armstrong isn’t gonna burn prospects just to get rid of Allen so he’ll also acquire Dzingel to boost the top 6 for the playoffs.

makes sense. My only concern is that Binnington/Nilsson might not be a good enough goalie tandem to win the cup. I like Dzingel, but doubt we can sign him and a new goalie in 2019-2020.

Would be an awesome move to go get someone to replace Perron for the stretch run and then to get Perron back for the playoffs. Someone like Fabbri/Blais/Sanford is somewhat expendable when you look at the forwards that should be around at the end of training camp next year. I know you were talking about tossing Kyrou + at a big fish but this is still the move I like the most - Dzingel / MoJo / Zuccarello. Pure rentals unless they blow the doors off their short stints here.

My thinking is that this is probably the only chance Armstrong will have to correct his mistake on Allen. He’s not the type of guy who’s gonna give significant assets for someone to take Allen so he’ll probably do what he did in the Schenn/ROR deals and add while subtracting. I’m not big on a rental this year (unless it’s Stone) but this way there’s value beyond this year in freedom at the goalie position.

Allen plays well when he shares the net. He might be worth holding on to. He stole that series a few years back against Minnesota. Id rather have him as a backup than Nilsson.

This is a good point, especially when you consider that Binnington is probably only getting about $2m on his next short deal. $6-7m on a goalie tandem is very palatable.

Yes but to me, downgrading on a backup is absolutely worth the freedom of cap-space and roster spot. Husso is still probably the goalie of the future and he will have to clear waivers before the Allen contract ends. Without Allen we’ll have the ability to capitalize on any situation that opens up wether it be Bobrovsky or someone else.
