Good potential return BUT. I would rather get a guaranteed 1st round pick instead. It's very possible Dallas misses the playoffs and Zucc decides to test free agency.

The potential of two 1st is something... but a 2nd and a 3rd is not much. Dzingel got more.

It could potentially be two 1sts for Zucc, but I think DAL might try to avoid making those conditions come to fruition. So probably NYR won't get the value they needed for Zucc.

I guess I’ll be rooting for the Stars and Lightning these coming playoffs.

But tbh, that return is pretty underwhelming. It’s unlikely either of those conditions will be met. A first rounder alone would’ve done just fine.

IMO, there are few players worth a 1st as a pure rental. You give up a 1st if you plan to re-sign a player.
NYR gets their 1st if Dallas convinces Zucc to stick around, but if they can't, then they've only paid a rental price.
If the player isn't willing to give a suitor some sort of positive indication, then it makes sense for both teams to hedge their bets.

The conditional 2nd is the main pick in this trade. It's the highest guaranteed return for NYR.
I have a feeling it was this or two 2nds and they were willing to concede the difference between a 2nd and a 3rd for two cracks at a 1st.

I totally agree! A guarantee would be a lot better!

So a 2nd and a 3rd for a rental.
He won't be resigned there. And they won't make it to the third round. So that's a done deal.

This has turned out to be a very weird trade. Why is Dallas so willing to give up so much for Matts Zuccarello? Do they really think they will be making a deep run this season? Playoffs are required first.

Could turn out really good for the Rangers, and it could turn out very bad for them. It depends what the picks turn out to be. I don't see Dallas going to round 3, so i'd guess it's either a 1st+2nd or 2nd+3rd. But the playoffs are so unpredictable, so who knows?

Only good for the Rangers if DAL wins 2 rounds. If they do, DAL will not re-sign him. Too expensive. Two 1st rounders would be insane! LOL! I mean, DAL would still have to pay his salary!

maybe due to the emotional value of Zuccarello, I think this is a terrible trade. I just don't see them extending Zuccarello and the WCF chances for Dallas are more than slim. really disappointing return for one of the greatest Rangers of the past decade.

Cant look at this trade in a vacuum you are getting a top 50 pick this year in a very deep draft. If condition on the 2019 2nd round pick aren't met the pick will probably be somewhere around 45. If the conditions are met the pick will be 29-31. I think there is a good chance Zucc resigns in Dallas. But even if he doesn't the return would still be ok for a rental. A lot of people judge this trade with their heart because of what Zucc brings to the ice but unfortunately in a world dominated by advanced statistics you just cant quantify the intangibles.

Will have to wait and see before we can truly judge this pick but I dont think the value right now is horrific like people are making it out to be.

How do people think the Stars won this trade? There is a possibility they could be giving up 2 1st round picks.

Because a 2nd and 3rd are within the realm of reasonable for a top 6 rental and they got the better player in the deal.
Nobody thinks Dallas will make it far enough for NYR to get one of the 1sts. I'm not even convinced Dallas does, but this shows their players and fanbase they are making an effort. (Basically ownership taking responsibility after making some irresponsible comments this season.)

Whether Dallas re-signs him is completely their choice. Whether the trade would then be still worth it, depends on how well Zucc performs in Dallas.
If he performs poorly and they don't re-sign him, it changes nothing. If he performs well and they re-sign him, then the value to NYR and the value to Dallas both increase by a similar amount, so at worst it could become a "fair" trade.
Dallas has all the control and an NHL player, while NYR is crossing their fingers that they get better picks and that those picks eventually turn into NHL players.

Oh ****, voted fair deal before reading those conditions. This is a win for the Rags, no doubt. A 3rd rnd becoming a first rnd pick next year if they resign him? So currently he is seriously just a rental as a 3rd vs a 1rst is quite a large consideration. The 2nd becomes a 1rst this year if they make it to the western conference finals, and he plays 50% of the first 2 rounds games. That's also a great deal, as the West isn't locked up at all right now, and who knows which team will come out of that mess. Dallas should be able to improve their pp and general offense with this trade, while hopefully not sacrificing defense, and I guess Lovejoy being brought in is them trying to push that message as well. So not a bad bet on improving the 2nd to a late 1rst rnd pick, though not as good of a bet made on the 3rd to 1rst condition.
