Only JP trade I would consider - has to be a home run or no trade at all

Description
JP is not a bust. Not many 20 year olds have close to 150 games played already. I could see him really hitting his stride around 22-23 but it looks like it'll be somewhere else. Reports are Oilers are asking teams to take on Lucic's contract as well.

I wouldn't trade Puljujarvi but if there's no other choice, I would do this because it clears cap as well as getting an asset back (2nd rounder). Strome and Fast don't really hold much value but their place holders in the lineup. Regardless, JP shouldn't be traded but if he were, we need to attach a bad contract and get back an asset. It seems like its not worth it and that might be it which means its not worth it to trade JP.

On a side note, I remember seeing JP in a Rangers jersey before (might be a fan of the team already). Also Lucic would have to waive his NMC for this deal and I'm not sure if he cares more about the city or the standings but he's always been a guy who thrived in nice cities such as Boston and LA so he might waive for NY.

I don't think they can move the Lucic contract unless they end up with a top 2 pick and trade it at the draft along with JP, another prospect and a future first.

That's why I said there's no trade that's worth it.

See the type of JP trade I would be okay with is a 1 for 1 with another young player with upside. Like maybe JP for Kempe, 1 for 1. Kempe has struggled this season, but his speed could compliment McDavid's. Puljujarvi has he higher upside, but Kempe has proven more at the NHL level. Or maybe a guy like Jack Roslovic, who's in a similar position to JP. All the skill in the world, but has struggled at the NHL level

I think Roslovic is playing real well actually so I don't think the Jets would let him go for JP. There's tons of trades out there for JP. If you're looking at similar struggling prospects from 2014 to now, there's lots of forwards out there. Jost, Zacha to name a couple. Another scenario could be to add a pick to JP and get a bonafide Top 6 Forward. But in this scenario, the Oil get two top 9 forward and a 2nd rounder while getting rid of Lucic's contract. I think that has the most value. Of course Jesse has the highest upside in all players involved in the trade but the Oilers' timeline to compete for the playoffs is now which means we need to add player in their primes now. I just don't think a 1 for 1 would advance the Oilers in any way because the player coming back could also bust. Better to get proven talent now, shed Lucic, and get a draft pick for it.

It might not be worth it because of how much we're getting but that's because JP could explode in a change of scenery and I think that's highly likely.

Good points! But I just don't think it'll be this easy to shed Lucic's contract. 4 more years of a 4th liner at 6 million is just absolutely brutal. And because of the way it was structured with signing bonuses, the contract is essentially buyout proof, which makes it even worse. I just can't see any team being able to justify taking on this horrendous contract for 4 more seasons, no team plans on rebuilding more than 2 seasons. So the package would have to be massive, which it isn't. And I don't think the value is even close on this trade. Just my opinion though

The contract is buyout proof because majority of it is in signing bonus. But after July 2 this year, his actual salary drops to 3M for the year and 1.5M for the remaining or something like that. That means his cap hit is 6M but his actual salary is less. The contract is structured so that it can be traded to a team that needs to meet the cap floor but the actual salary is way less. Arizona or Ottawa are a couple teams that might need to hit the cap floor. Lucic and Russell's contract are front loaded because the Oilers owner can afford to spend to the cap every year but other team's owners might have internal caps.

Another trade for Lucic could be a Horton or a MacArthur type where they still get paid for LTIR but don't even contribute to a team. At least Lucic getting paid 1.5M for the next couple years could contribute to a team.

EDIT - I wasn't 100% on his contract structure but here it is. https://www.capfriendly.com/players/milan-lucic

Yeah, as you can see his total salary for the remaining years is still between 6million and 4million per year, so not great for teams who don't want to spend money. I get what you're saying, I just think there's easier ways to reach the cap floor
