Deadline Grit

Created by: chart46
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 24, 2019
Published: Feb. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I like Brown a lot but I think he's fallen out of favour and is wasting his talent on the forth line.

I think adding a solid roster player to the trade will help make Simmons a bit cheaper.

Adding Simmons gives them much needed strength and allows you to move Marleau who has been struggling down to strengthen the forth line

I think putting Simmons in the JVR spot in front of the net on the first PP might spark things while giving the second PP a bit more depth.

I also think putting a big tough guy like Simmons with Matthews will protect him without sacrificing offensive potency.

Thoughts?

Not a fan of Simmonds, he doesn't have the foot speed to keep up with any of the Leafs expect for their 4th line.

I don't disagree with that, but in the past he has fit well Giroux and Voracek (I understand he's older and slower now). I think you could flip him and Marleau until you find a combo that works. That being said I think the price of Ferland is too high and without adding a power forward the Buds will struggle in the playoffs

I like it for the leafs. Adding some grit for a playoff run is going to be necessary I think, need some gritty guys to battle through a best of 7 series.

It actually makes very little sense for Toronto. They're not gonna wanna give up Brown for a rental, and Simmonds doesn't fit with their forward group. Where's he gonna play? He'd be right down in the same spot Brown is, on the 4th line. He doesn't have the foot speed to keep up with the rest of the group. Johnsson plays with Matthews and Kapanen (Simmonds isn't faster than any of them), Marleau isn't gonna play 4th line minutes either. So basically the Leafs give up assets they shouldn't be giving up to slightly improve their 4th line? & how much better really is Simmonds than Brown? Hard to argue he's much better. & Simmonds cap hit eats more into the cap which leaves less for bonus payouts this year.

Seems like a pretty easy decline from Toronto actually.

Don't get your obsession with simmonds speed? He is a top 6 winger. He can play and score. He is a lot more physical than brown - without a doubt he is an upgrade.

They probably could get him for less than the leafs are giving up in this trade (since Brown is an RFA and simmonds is a rental).

I don't care where he plays in the leafs lineup, but it's a fact that he is an upgrade over brown and his physical play would be very valuable to the leafs in the playoffs. Since the leafs are basically screwed next year with the cap it makes sense to go for it this year.

He wouldn't play in the top 6 in Toronto. He's probably slide in on the 3rd line, but then that results in 1 of Marleau of Nylander going to the 4th line (not happening).. where's the fit? He's a top 6 forward on most teams. Yes, without a doubt. Not in Toronto though.

& saying "I don't care where he plays in the lineup" is a terrible way to manage a team. You've gotta our guys in the right role to succeed. As we've both agreed, Simmonds is more suited for a top 6 role. But he wouldn't have that role in Toronto. To give up a guy that really Simmonds isn't THAT much better then (Brown can play anywhere in the lineup, top 6 included as he's scored 20 goals before) plus other assets for just for 1 shot doesn't make much sense. Brown suits his role perfect. His production is down cause he's mostly on the 4th line in Toronto. Toronto's has arguably the leagues deepest forward group, and if Brown were to play a top 9 or 6 role somewhere else, he'd hit 20 with ease along with better defence than Simmonds. Brown is one of Toronto's best penalty killers and they're not gonna throw him away for a rental.

I agree with all the talk that the Leafs need to add a forward that plays a bit more physical. But the whole "grit" y'all gets blown out of proportion. They have to find the right guy for the right role at the right price. Simmonds is just not that guy

The reason I say I dont care where simmonds plays in the lineup is because he can play on any line. He is a power forward, he will play that role whether it is in the top 6 or the bottom 6.

Brown's career high was 20 goals when he was getting top 6 minutes (16 min / game). Simmonds has scored at a pace of anywhere between 26 and 32 goals over the past 5 years playing those minutes. He is having a down year but he is still on pace for 21 goals. The big difference is simmonds is a beast, he gets over 100 hits a year easily. He would really help Toronto in the playoffs.

Edit:
I honestly believe adding simmonds puts Toronto into a serious threat to win the cup, right now they will be in tough to beat Tampa and Boston (everyone will have a tough time beating tampa).

Simmonds won't be able to keep up with Toronto's forwards.

Leafs have played with Tampa all season long. first game they lost but drastically out played them, Vasi stole that game from them. Second game was a lot closer in play but Toronto won..

& Boston is hard to judge this season cause when Toronto and Boston have played, both teams haven't been 100% healthy. On paper, Toronto looks much better than Boston so it'll be a good matchup.

Here’s the reality from my perspective

a) Dubas and Babcock have been talking daily

b) I don’t think Dubas would give up assets for a rental unless babcock is in his ear telling him that’s the guy he wants

c) If the above is true, Simmonds would slot in beside Matthews, IMO. He’d be the workhorse on that line like Hyman is for the Tavares line. At worst he’d be on a third line with Kadri and the two of them would just piss off everyone they’re matched up with

I don’t know how much the leafs are in on Wayne...id be okay with the above asking price but I’d just as soon walk away if the ask was higher.

I don’t think he’s the difference between a first round exit and a cup finals appearance....and I’m not sure how losing a guy like Brown affects the locker room morale...but if you go out and get a warrior like Simmonds it can help light a fire in the current group too.

Simmonds isn't slow man. He weighs the same as brown even though he is 2 inches taller, he is in great shape. It's like you think just because he is physical that he can't skate. This is all in your head.

That's nice that the leafs have played with Tampa all season long, the habs have played with Toronto all season long but I'm not gonna pretend that they couldn't use some help to beat them.

I just know, Boston has the leafs number lately and no matter what the lineups are on paper, it will be a tough series.

Here is an example of simmonds skating: please stop pretending that the leafs entire team is too fast for everyone else in the league. As others have said, simmonds would be an amazing fit with Matthews
