hahahahaha why would anybody in their right mind move from San Jose, California to Detroit. Not even considering how much better of a hockey team the sharks are this is just silly. If he doesnt re-sign in SJ he sure as heck aint going to detroit lol

Money talks and the Sweden culture is strong with DET. Plus, being away from the spotlight while still playing in a great hockey market does have some appeal.

how is San Jose the spotlight?

its like the most laid back place to play hockey lol

and money talks? you offered him 10 million here I bet he ends up getting at least 11 mil

the swedish culture is strong haha? your teams best swede just waived his no trade clause to go to Cali lol

Karlsson is staying in SJ. if he does leave its not to go to a bad team like DET. i would literally bet my house on it

Karlsson is looking for at least 7 x 11.5 or 7 x 12 He's not signing for 7 x 10 especially not in Detroit. While as a Wings fan i would love to see Karlsson in a Wings jersey. It's just not happening.

A few things here:

1. He can't get 7 years if DET signs him. His max would be 6. He could get 8 from SJS until July 1st, and 7 after July 1st, but only from SJS.
2. He'll get more than 10, it'll be more like 11, 11.25. I don't think he'll command 12, mainly because he's older than Tavares and way older than Matthews. He'll get max years, but not max money.
3. SJS is all in this year. I don't think having 3 defenders taking ~40% of the cap is sustainable, especially with a bunch of FA forwards they'll have to restock. They'll have $24mm to sign 10 bodies (including the cap increase), and 1 guy taking close to 50% of that makes it hard. I expect Karlsson to go for a cup, and win or lose, leave SJS (and California period, see next bullet).
4. 11.5 in CA is like 10.5 in DET, like 9.75 in Florida. Taxes are playing a huge role in where players sign (especially if its their last big contract). CA taxes are equivalent to Canadian taxes.
5. DET is an Original 6 team, a cap spending team, and known for player and lifestyle quality. This isn't basketball. There is a reason why Steve Yzerman's family never left DET (and why he'll be back with the org next year), why every former player talks glowingly about the organization (even Babcock constantly praises the org), why it's run by former Red Wings and NHL players, why it's had the same owner since the early 80s, why they get meetings with top FAs (guarantee they'll get a meeting with Panarin, Karlsson, and Stone if they make it to FA). Very few teams can say that. DET is the model franchise everyone is trying to build (and every owner admits it).
