Try to send Callahan back to NYR. I also think they may have to move Miller, they may also bridge Point

Well ... what picks / prospects would Tampa give up in order to get one of Callahan's approved teams to accept the trade?

That would save $5,000,000 if he's replaced with an ELC .... so how does Tampa save the other $8,000,000?

Replacing Coburn and Girardi with ELC's might save another $3,000,000 .... but we're still $5,000,000 over the cap after all 3 moves.

All three moves combined would probably get it done (assuming Callahan + Miller are replaced with ELC's and Point is bridged at around $7,000,000).

Why does point bridge though? He’s already proven he’s an elite player he has no reason to want to bridge unless to get to UFA Faster

Stralman, Coburn and Girardi either A) sign for less or B) are replaced by cheaper players. Not as high as $13M that you suggested. But Callahan is a prime candidate to be moved regardless

If all 3 are replaced with $1,000,000 players than Tampa saves $6,500,000.

That still leaves them $6,500,000 over the cap .... and Callahan can only save $5,000,000 if he's replaced with an ELC.

So Miller might have to go too (along with picks / prospects included in the Callahan trade).

Which doesn't leave the team in great shape on defense.

especially after the Matthews contract. Don't think Point didn't notice that one.

Based off your team above for next year the Bolts should be okay and can get it done without losing Miller. Point won't get more then Kucherov... I know he is a center and Matthews got his number but the Lightning have a very fixed salary structure and Kucherov is at the top. If Point wants to stay in Tampa he is going to have to give a little. I bet Point signs for somewhere near Stamkos's number 8,5M for 5 years so that is 2M saved and it puts him as a UFA at 27 to score another big contract. They trade Callahan lose his 5.8M and add Martel who only gets 700K to put him as 13th forward and a net 5.1M to replace Callahan. Girardi won't be resigned so thats 2.5M. Take away Stralman and Coburn and that is 7M.

That is 16.6M leaving 3.5M available. So they resign Coburn or Stralman for 2.5M which leaves 1M for another 5-7 dman to fill out the roster. Its doable for next year based on your roster with these changes.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

If Point signs for less than 9 it’d be surprising, but if he does it’ll be less than 5 years either 4 to take him to UFA or 3 to get one more RFA contract

Not sure who let you offer their contracts wink Nearly everyone got overpaid lol. Take 3m off your Point contract, 2m off Stralman's, 1m off Girardi's, 1m off Coburn's, don't resign Rutta, and last but not least: DUMP CALLY somewhere and save 5.8m

Who/what do we trade with Cally? Personally I think a 2nd will do it. But I can tell you It won't require ANYWHERE NEAR the value of Cal Foote, but for the sake of the argument... LET'S JUST SAY add Foote w/ Cally so we can get past this annoying "roadblock".

Honestly people talking about offer sheets and such I’m surprised nobody has yet to talk about Point. IMO he’s a much better target for an offer sheet than Marner he’s A Elite Center that can put up 100 points with a team like TB that has much less cap space then the leafs. I don’t see why a team like CAR does not throw an offer of 12m at Point in the offseason to get the elite scoring forward they have been looking for. Dayum well we know TB can’t afford it

@drewjenks @pharrow

Follows Johnson, Palat & Kucherov's 3 year bridge deals. Matthews equivalent contract with Tampa's tax rate would be 8.6m. Safe to say that'd be the max Point will be able to score. I predict 7-7.5m, no more than 8.3m.

Well for starters Stralman, Coburn, and Girardi won’t be signed... all them will be replaced with ELCs or cheaper dmen. And Callahan will be traded with a pick, he’s only got a limited ntc. But if for some reason that can’t happen, he’ll be bought out

Matthews tax rate is the exact same as Tampa's - there is a Canada / US tax treaty that lets him pay tax through the state he chooses (because he's an American athelete).

Look it up.

I doubt Points gonna take $8,500,000 x 5 years after a 105 point season (what he's on pace for).

LOL soooo:

Point = $7,500,000 (after a 105 point season at Center? .... $7,000,000 is Paccioretty / Van Riemsdyk / Evander Kane level contracts)
Stralman = $2,500,000 (as a UFA top 4 RD .... plenty of teams would offer him $4,000,000 - $5,500,000)
Girardi = $1,500,000 (as a UFA RD)
Coburn = $1,500,000 (as a UFA LD)

Honestly, I don't even think the tax rate matters. I mean I know it does for the player, but not in the ask. You wouldn't take less money just because someone told you the tax rate is different. If they pay someone 11 million per season, and you are up there at the same level as that player, you are going to ask for the 11 million too. Who care what the tax rate is. It's just more money for you, but it doesn't mean you would charge less for your services.
It's like buying a car. You wouldn't sell a car less in one state compared to another because of the tax. The value of the car is what it is. The player is simply a product.

Signing all three of those UFA Dmen may not be cap practical. Callahan is a "big hope" for cap relief. Realistically Miller and Gourde (before July 1st) might be the only two options.

Wow, where to people get off thinking Florida is a 30% difference in tax rates? Never mind it's highly unlikely high end player pay personal tax rates.

The Wild will gladly take Callahan's contract, and Mitchell Stephens OR Cal Foote in exchange for a 6th round draft pick.

Cally and Stephens for a 6th... I think the Bolts would do that. Mitchel Stephens is a real good prospect but the Bolts have plenty of forward depth and no defense depth so they wouldn't want to lose Foote.

You are assuming that Point would sign that offer as he has to be willing to play there, Point might want to stay in Tampa - if he wants to stay in Tampa he is going to have to take less based on the Lightning's salary structure. Will be interesting to see how his contract plays out. All these big ELC contract renewals are going to be interesting to watch.

Personally I think the players primed for offer sheets are the next level players behind the Marner, Point, Aho, Rantanan. Guys like Boeser, Kapanen, even Laine are more likely to be offer sheeted since the cost won't be as high.

I think, they should offer Point a 2 year 7.5M bridge deal. 2020 offer Vasi a new contract and 2021 with Seattle they can offer Point a 8y 10.5 - 11.5M contract
