I like Trouba as much as the next guy but $8,000,000 per year for him is grossly overpaying. He is maybe the third best d-man on that team. As of 3-5-2019 $8,000,000 per year would tie him with Burns and Carlson as the 2th highest aav in the league for defensemen.

Lets just draft the best dman available with our highest 1st round pick. Or try to move up to get the best one.

Trouba isn't signing an offer sheet, And risk Winnipeg matching it. And being stuck there for an eternity. Fat chance of Trouba signing an offer sheet from the Rangers. He's looking at Detroit, Tampa or Florida as viable options.

Dude, everyone knows that you think he only wants to go to Detroit or Florida. People can put other proposals out there. Unless you're his brother, get over it.

Not saying they can't? Just saying that's what his own agent Kurt Overhardt stated to Dreger awhile back. But things can change.

I'd doubt the Rangers target another defenseman with their high first this year. They stocked up on a lot of promising defenseman last year and the only guy worthy of a top 10 pick this year would be Byram, who might not even be NHL ready yet.

I'd disagree. His numbers are on-par with (if not better than) OEL's, who signed an 8 year extension at 8.25 per.

Your honestly comparing Trouba to OEL? For starters OEL plays top pairing minutes on an offensively challenged team. What do you think OEL numbers would look like in Winnipeg? If any NHL GM had the choice between Trouba and OEL it would be OEL and there woulnd't be any hesitation. For next season $8,000,000 aav would have him tied for the 4th highest paid d-man in the league. Let that sink in 4th best in the NHL. Trouba isn't even one of the top two d-man on his own team!

Who in our system, except maybe Miller, is close to how good even Evan Bouchard is?

Trouba has more Even strength TOI as well as PK TOI than EOL... When comparing contract AAV, it's important to look at percentage of Cap at signing. Byfuglien got 10.41, Burns got 10.96, OEL got 10.38. this would be 9.69 for Trouba.

Who in this Draft is better than anyone in the system, outside of Byram, who will be gone by the time they pick?

What are detroit fans going to do if Trouba doesnt end up being a Red Wing after 3-4 years of the fan base claiming he will be one just bc hes from Michigan

I can't say I know yet. I don't see the point in going after Trouba, though. When we have the potential to develop a similar skilled player at a fraction of the cost, that will be in a better place developmentally when our window opens up again. Just my opinion.

So you want to pay Trouba in the vicinity of perennial all stars and #1 dman? Brent Burns has 3 70+ point seasons, 5 60+ point seasons and 3 20 goal seasons. Again I am a fan of Trouba, I like him but he is a second pairing 3-4 d man on a good team.

Right, I must've forgot that the best way to judge a defenseman was based off of point totals. I'd argue he's a top pairing guy on ~20 teams today. You can afford to pay a top pairing defenseman a little more of that's what it takes when you have a #1 center locked up for 4 years at 5.3 million per.

At $8,000,000 per you are paying Trouba for a role he does not currently have and has been passed over for. When the Jet's D is healthy Trouba does not play on their top pairing. That is a heck of a ($40 million) gamble that he will fill a position that was his for the taking in Winnipeg until he got past up by Morrissey. Again I like Trouba but paying essentially a 2nd pairing, minutes eating defenseman $8,000,000 can work when the team is bad but if the team gets good it will be a cap nightmare and an unmovable contract.
