I think its pretty funny how Jets fans are so enamored with Hayes already. He's played three games, got three points in one game and two of the points came from empty net goals... Lol
Let's see what he does in the rest of the season and playoffs before we trade away a key player that's been with the team since it arrived from Atlanta.

it's not so enamored with Hayes as it's the lack of confidence that management has put on Little as a 2nd line C 2 years in a row

Then trade for a guy with some term.

Also they really handled this whole issue so very poorly, they get a 2C cause Little and Laine have no chemistry together but then they put Laine on the top line and find out Laine is fine there. Little has always played very well with and has great chemistry with Ehlers and Connor and they'd make a great 2nd line.
It's really too bad, they wasted a 1st round pick and a good young player(Lemieux) for a rental they didn't need all because the coach was reluctant to try Laine on the top line, so dumb.

The Jets player/asset management has been really bad the last two seasons.

think people are hoping that Hayes will resign because it's clear the Jets don't have confidence in Little as a 2nd line C in the playoffs. and IMO he has the worst contract for the Jets to move

To say the Jets “player/asset management has been really bad the last two seasons” is quite the stretch. Lemieux while a decent young player was never going to be a Top 6 forward and is questionable to be long term productive 3rd liner. He’s a 4th liner. Erik Foley, who they traded last year for Paul Stastny, decent prospect but has been out with a concussion all year. He too has question in terms of his potential. 3rd line player at best?? The 1st rounders given up are the price of doing business to acquire talents to solidly your lineup for the playoffs when teams like the Jets have a legitimate chance of winning the cup.

Your argument that they didn’t need a rental because you could have just moved Laine up and everything would have been just fine is ridiculous, depth matters. God forbid Scheifele or Little would have went down. What do you do? Is roslovic really the #2 Centre you want in the playoffs going up against Nashville or St. Louis? Surely you wouldn’t want Wheeler coming off the wing to centre the line when he and Scheifele are arguably a top 5 duo in the league and then mix in an elite scorer in Patrik Laine to top it all off. DEPTH MATTERS! Hayes gives the Jets so many more options. The team now has 3 top 2 Centres to go along with Roslovic, Lowry, Copp, Perreault, Lindholm, Hendricks who all can play Centre The point being is that with those 3 guys you have top 6 options that at the price of a mid level prospect and a draft choice allows you to compete for a cup.

And a final point, the jets did acquire this depth without having to give up Vesalainen, Roslovic, Appleton, Niku, Stanley, Samberg, Gwanke, Comrie or Berdin who are their best prospects. So calling it reall bad player/asset management is ridiculous.

I think his contract is alright, center depth is huge and the Jets don't have much of it. I'd be more concerned with Perreault's contract, his production has really dropped off and he's just so slow, hopefully he can be moved for any kind of return rather than costing them assets to move him.

Oh and I forgot to mention I think there's a less then 1% chance Hayes resigns but ya never know.

I always think this argument is funny, "he'd never be anything more then a 3rd liner so dump him for whatever", why not use him and the 1st round picks and more if necessary in a trade to get someone with term? I'm not a Lemieux fan but apparently teams were inquiring about him as soon as the Rangers got him, maybe he had more value then the Jets realized.
Buffalo turned a 1st round pick and a prospect into a top 4 defenseman with term and RFA status after his present contract ends in another season, the Jets turned the same package into a rental 2C, doesn't seem like great asset management to me.

Your argument that they didn’t need a rental because you could have just moved Laine up and everything would have been just fine is ridiculous, depth matters. I'm a firm believer in having center depth but I'm opposed to wasting assets of higher value on rentals.
Again this is two years now they've gone and traded the same package for what will likely be a rental center and they might be doing the same thing next TDL, how many times do you do the same thing before you finally conclude your wasting assets and shoud just fill the void that you think is there with a more permanent solution. First round picks are VERY important even late ones and they're MORE important to a team in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada which will never be a draw for free agents. Look at this present roster and where did most of the players on it come from, its mostly from the draft. I know depth matters but there were cheaper options then Hayes and I'd argue what this team really needs is a 3C that has more offense to his game but if you really think you need a 2C once again my point is get someone with term!!!!!

And a final point, the jets did acquire this depth without having to give up Vesalainen, Roslovic, Appleton, Niku, Stanley, Samberg, Gwanke, Comrie or Berdin who are their best prospects. So calling it reall bad player/asset management is ridiculous.

My point about bad player/asset management goes beyond just trading for rentals. I'm very happy Chevy didn't sell the farm and deal Roslovic and/or Niku for Stone. Is playing Jack Roslovic on the 4th line RW spot with 6 minutes of ice time good player management? Was bringing Nic Petan straight from junior to the NHL to center a 4th line with players he'd never work with in a season where the team was gonna suck anyway good player management? Is trading a 1st and a prospect two years in a row to fill the same position good roster management? If this 2C spot was so important to fill why wasn't it filled already with a more permanent solution? If the organization is so flush with prospects(it's actually not) why not part with some in a trade and fill the 2C position? Also if they're gonna try to sign Hayes like they did Stastny is getting them when they're about to sign their biggest contract smart? Youre overpaying twice!! Look at the moves they've made in the last few seasons, lots of young talent and picks have been moved with nothing to show for it. The roster management hasn't been downright terrible or anything but it hasn't been all that good either.

So what’s the alternative? Should Chevy have stood pat? Let nashville, Vegas, San Jose scoop up the rentals and make their teams better while the jets, because we HAVE to keep players by drafting them and do nothing to improve our team in season. Roll the dice on the team we have every year. The jets coming in to this offseason have a number of cap issues to deal with. So in this instance taking on a multi year contract was completely out of the question. At the end of the day, if the jets win the Stanley cup are you really going to concern yourself with the fact that they lost a couple 1st round picks. You say you have nothing to show for it if they walk, but a silver trophy and banner is Definitely something to show. As a win now team you’re putting your team in the best position to win. Costs are associated with that. Risks need to be taken. Can’t always be looking to the future.
