50k above league minimum next year, can be buried in the AHL. Nothing to really say or criticize about this contract.

Dubas has been active in extending his team, wonder if he extend everyone before Marner then just offers him the rest of the Leafs' cap space as his contract AAV lol

Just another one way contract. Leafs use the incentive of Guaranteed money to fill out their roster. Much like Moore and Rosen.

I don't think this is enough money for Sparks, meaning the contract is fantastic. Sparks, to me, has proven he is ready for the role of NHL backup. He's had a decent season and I could compare him to Colin Delia. Sparks could have gotten the 2-way league max, of 925k. Great job by Dubas.

are you kidding me?
It's an ok contract for a guy who got lit up giving up a .902 save %. and 3 goals per game.
I'm not really sure he had much leverage in deciding to sign or not. It's not like with his play anyone was beating down his door. It's no wonder it's a one year deal. Short leash is good on backup goalies who aren't exactly showing great play.

HAHA! Dubas saved 175K! Maybe he can put that towards the $9.5M that Marner is gonna ask for!

If the Leafs can get Marner at $9.5M for 6y I’ll be ecstatic. Should have signed him last year for $7-8M over 6 or more years - before he started playing on Tavares’ wing (as opposed to Tyler Bozak). What did Dubas think was gonna happen?

I don’t think much under $10M for 6y (and they have to go 6y as Matthews 2nd contract will be up in 5y) is realistic anymore.

Rumor had Marner's agent last summer asked for 5 years @ 9 million, Dumass countered offer with the Draisaitl offer of 8 years @ 8.5 million. This is why they have stopped talking.

Marner 2 seasons @ 9 ish million, you heard it hear first, remember that. I was correct claiming Matthews was getting 4-5 years while everyone else had made ACGM giving him 7-8 years.

btw since no one else mentioned it, Sparks contract is an UFA expiring one, so bye bye Sparky for 20-21.

Why would Marner possibly sign a short term or bridge deal after the season he's having? I doubt his bargaining power will increase much in two years and he'd be taking a big risk. He should look to sign an 8 year deal $10.5M AAV. He'll probably compromise at around $9M. Sometimes holding out backfires. It worked last summer, but it might not work again.

See Kucherov's 2 yr bridge contract, that's your answer.

I'm not even sure what that means. Totally different situation entirely. Kucherov signed a 3 year bridge deal after posting back to back seasons of 65 and 66 points. Marner is going to crush his point total of 69 from last season and 61 from the year before. A player should always look to sign an extension after a career season. Nobody knows if Marner will be at or near 100 points in 2 years. But he's gonna be there this season.
