Take Tolvanen out and they might consider it. No need for him to be in this deal. You're the one trying to ship out the bad contract (Zaitsev), not them.

    What about-

Nylander+Zaitsev+a prospect better than Timoshov+2nd for Subban? Doubt they need to add Liljegren/Sandin.

I think Zaitsev playing with either Josi/Ekholm, makes him alot more attractive. especially with Ellis $ up next year, and Josi $ way up in 2 years vs PK's $9m.

add to that Nylander immediately improves the secondary scoring, and the leagues (shockingly) worst PP unit

apparently at trade Deadline the preds couldn't even get a 1st for Tolvanen, so getting the extra years of cost certainty and younger players for PK, and i don't think its unfair for the Leafs to make the ask for him

It may make him more attractive next year if he's playing with one of those guys, but right now he's still Nikita Zaitsev-a mediocre dman on a contract that is about 5 years too long.

Overall- Subban > Nylander, and Timashov is needed to get them to take Zaitsev's contract. So you're short on the Leafs end.

Not really sure where you saw the Tolvanen info. All I've seen is that the Preds weren't willing to give him up in a rental situation. Don't see where they were trying to trade him for picks.

Nylander's value is still at an all time low. His number have improved a good amount over the last 10 games but that's still only 5 points in 10 games (41 point pace if extrapolated to an 82 game season). Now i think he'll recover so i'd be willing to trade for him. I also don't think Zaitsev is that bad and could use a change of scenery. He'd likely look real good next to Josi with Ekholm/Ellis being a pairing (they looked real good too when they were together previously).

To me, Subban = Nylander. Nylander is a young winger with room to grow. Subban is still great but nearing the wrong side of 30.
I wouldn't give up Tolvanen for Zaitsev + Timashov. Zaitsev's contract right now doesn't look great. 5 more years at 4.5M and it appears he's lost almost all offensive ability he had when he signed that deal. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at him and hope he rebounds but Tolvanen isn't a piece i'd be willing to part with to hope that the recovery happens. Maybe rights to Patrick Harper or Justin Kirkland type player.
