Why are teams helping out Toronto??? For Brown and his 5 goals on a power house team?? A 3rd rd pick 3 drafts from now??

The best way to get under the cap is pay Zaitsev's bonus and trade him and a 2020 pick for a 2020 pick to Ottawa. They get a good 3rd line dman and Toronto clears 4.5 mil in cap space.

“IF” Marleau retires his contract will be moved. Not my AGM so don’t shoot the messenger

FTR, this was meant to show the idea that has been posted, but with my own numbers and ideas. This is the same thing that Brooks Orpik did, which worked out great for both the Caps and him. This would likely imply an immediate buyout by ARI, which may require us to give more, and I don't have much of a problem with that.

As much as Zaitzev is bad, yodda yodda yodda, turnover this, turnover that....
he is young, and I wanna give him a chance with Dermott. Its true, the way our d core is set up, we need more dmen, and there are not that many cheap ones on the market. Zaitzev is paid too much. But, he has a lot of term, and with 4 million dollars that's hard to get. He can play while we wait for the swedes (Sandin and Lilly), and if he hasn't bounced back by then, we trade him. At that point, the value to cap down him is also lowered by the term of the deal.

I think if we can pull off the above idea, getting Marleau back and keeping all of those RFAs, it's worth the cost. We lose Brown and a good pick? well worth it considering Trevor Moore's play, and the skill level of our team now. We also keep Zaitzev, and don't cap dump a long term contract (can be very risky if he bounces back) until we 100% need to. If this Marleau idea works instead, why the hell not?

NMC argument is valid, but IIRC Orpik had a M-NTC as well, and decided to let himself get moved because he knew he would be bought out and could find another team. If Marleau can force their hand to buy him out (which he probably can considering he could threaten retirement, and his bad cap hit), he'd be willing to do it.

I admit, ITS A HUGE IF. It's HIGHLY UNLIKELY. But, if possible, its a great idea.

Isn't that what ACGMs are for? Creating new ideas, even if unrealistic in some ways, but making them as reasonable (if they were to happen) as possible? I believe that's what I've done. I've signed reasonable contracts, found a way to keep the majority of the team here, and been reasonable with the cost to perform this trade (although I will admit it would take more, let's just say adding a 2020 second and moving the third to a 4th.)

For the 1000th time on the ACGMs.

His bonus is paid after the buyout period. So the only scenario that works is if he wants to retire.

Which is probably a 95% chance of not happening.

How about trade the guy who never should have been signed in the first place; knowing the young guns weren't going to be cheap (I might be giving Dubas too much credit, maybe he truly thought he could get Matthews @ Eichel $, Marner @ Draisaitl $, Nylander @ Larkin $, Johnsson @ J. Anderson $ and Kapanen @ C. Brown) yes I'm talking about Tavares, easily the best and worst contract signing ever.

If Marleau retires, he retires. (and his cap is traded). Let's forgot him resigning with the Leafs. But think your team is pretty realistic.

You are correct but maybe a deal can be struck with Ottawa for a pick and we take on gaborik.... for the record though I don’t think Marleau’s contract can be orpik’d without catching **** from the league as it is a 35+ contract and gets no relief from a buyout.

Melnyk can barely pay salaries during the year, doubtful he has the cash flow in July.

I’d be curious if Toronto would take on half of Jay Beagles contract over the next three years in exchange for Marleau.

So like, Beagle (50 percent retained = 3x1.5 M) for Marleau (1x6). Vancouver could then immediately buy him out and Marleau does whatever he wants. Don’t know if that works for either team (or what Toronto would have to add), but that would be my first thought.

That would completely work. We could use him as a 4c.

Unless the Leafs win a cup, Marleau won't waive. Even in that case, the odds would be quite slim. He could possible win the cup and ride off into the sunset, enabling the Leafs to trade his contract, but why on earth would he do that? He can still play hockey and he'd much rather collect his salary for next year. The truth is that the probability of Marleau getting traded is very slim.

That is why we would take on gaborik. Makes sense.

This is a very interesting idea.
