It's a trade to Sens who have cap space for the retired Marleau (pending) and Kadri as the sweetener. Just showing the Leafs cap situation and why so big money..in this case 10.625m jettisoned. With the addition cap space extended Johnsson, Kapanen and Marner to longer term deals.

No way they dump one of the best centres in the league as a sweetener. A draft pick or middling prospect sure. Kadri is just too valuable. I’d love it if Marleau would retire though. July 2nd after his signing bonus paid. Ottawa definitely takes the cap hit in trade for a 3rd.

Both teams say no. That's a pretty awful trade

Marleau isn't going anywhere. With the Leafs being contenders, I would much rather keep both of those players... who could combine for 40 goals next year, and trade Zaitsev and Brown even is it means losing prospects and/or picks.

It might not be probable...but it's certainly possible he collects his July 1 bonus and opts to retire instead of play another year for $1.25m.

In any event, I think he's done more for this franchise than he'll every fully get credit for

Ottawa, and every other team pass on Marleau. Fix your own problem. Kadri, Kapanen, Morgan Rielly, sure I'll help...

Jesus.....T.O trades over 10M in cap away for nothing in return and simply only signs current RFA's and they're still right up against the cap...... You'd have to think even with this, they wouldn't be done. They'd still likely benefit from moving out Brown and Zaitzev....... at least one of them.

The issue with moving Brown...is he doesn't solve that much cap wise , although as you suggest, he is a logical trade. I have more trouble moving Zaitsev, because there is no minute eating Dman to take his place. At least with moving Kadri and his cap is similar to Zaitsev's, the Leafs have a replacement at centre in Nylander.

You're right. I was more showing that it's 10m of cap that has to be moved. Whatever the Leafs get in return in for Kadri would be a bonus.

Oh I know. I was just pointing out that removing 10M from the cap and only signing your RFAs, the leafs are still right up there against the cap. That's crazy.

Leafs ran into cap problem with a couple of situations...all their doing but not all bad.
    1. Signing Marleau to that three year deal
2.Signing a Tavares....a UFA, but for free, no assets traded
    3. Overpaying Nylander, Matthews
4, The unexpected "stardom" of Marner, Kapanen and Johnson which costs them more cap money than expected.

So if the solution is next year is a retired Marleau trade and the sweetener is Kadri to get cap compliant.....well that's not a real bad place to be in. If Marleau doesn't retire....yikes that's another 6.25m to get rid off. IMO the Leafs would not have acquired Muzzin at his 4m next year, unless they knew Marleau was retiring.

You're right it is not great for a team to be right against the cap,,,,,especially one that hasn't won a playoff round with this group. But the Leafs aren't unique...Winnipeg, Anaheim are against the cap too. And Tampa too with all their NTCs, and Vegas is getting close to the cap also.
