Great player with a maybe too high cap hit at the end of the deal and a nmc for all 8 years... WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.
For right now, this is a great contract for what stone brings. Elite two way first liner at a good cap hit. Lets just hope he stays at the elite level through all 8 years.
He should, but ya never know anymore...

This does not make signing Marner any easier

It was so smart for the Bruins to sign Pastrnak early before he had proven himself and before star salaries escalated as a percentage of the cap

It will be really interesting to see how well Vegas does this year.

The expectations are so high, anything short of a repeat will feel like a failure after emptying their cupboards to win now, and Seattle is probably going to try the exact opposite. Hopefully Seattle just vacuums up all the bad contracts and doesn't go after a single star player in UFA.

You heard it here first. Zaitsev and a 1st to Seattle for them to leave the Leafs alone

Mixed feelings about this one. Great player, but is he going to be worth that through his age-34 season? I don't know.

I am a HUGE Stone fan!..... but 8x9.5 is steep...

VGK is going to get 5 elite years of him and then he's going to fall off a cliffff... He'll have a hard time keeping up with the play.....

I compare him to Perry (ish)

He hasn't proven himself yet playing with Vegas. He no doubts has extreme talent but he has yet to adjust to VGK. I also think this will create locker room problems because VGK has so many solid offensive players that some might not be happy being moved down to lower lines like Alex Tuch. Unless VGK plane on trading wild bill, Marchy, or Riley, I think this could be problematic. If you look at Toronto, specifically Kadri, his production has gone way down from where it has been the past two years being a 30+ goal scorer

I like it how Vegas has taken advantage of the misfits storyline and become an attractive place for UFAs. As the misfits are regressing the proven vets are already there taking the lead.

So starting next year Mark Stone will be getting paid the same amount as Nikita Kucherov. Either Mark Stone is grossly overpaid or Nikita Kucherov is grossly underpaid

I really don’t get how so many people are calling this a bad signing.
$9.5M AAV for an elite two way player is a great deal nowadays.
Also he’s going to be 34 years old in the last season of the contract. Does nobody realize that many top players play until they are 35 and can maintain at least a top 9 if not top 6 role?
Not to mention the cap will be somewhere around $100M when he’s on his last year or 2.

The contract will look good when he is a ppg player but look "Lucic" bad if he falls into below 50 point guy category.

Well it was reported on a shorter deal Stone was a 8-8.5 million $ guy, long term means more $. So if we try to compare Marner to Kucherov, if the Leafs want him for 7-8 years it'll cost them 10+ million, short term deal, 9 million.

This is a good signing.
Stones 6'4 he's got size, that tends to help players play longer in this league. So I see no problem with him playing into his mid 30s.
Some people want to compare his production to Kuch, but he's a different style player. He's a head ache to deal with on the ice. Vegas knows that.
I'm sure it might cause problems down the road with the cap and all, but this is a good move. It's not like they threw the money after a bad signing.

Steep contract however if he can be a PPG 2 way forward for 5 years, this will be pretty good, however this contract is 2 years too long and a million too much.

They didn't escalate at a percentage of the cap .... they escalated much faster.

How much has the cap gone up since Scheifele signed for for $6,125,000 x 8 years?

The cap was $73,000,000 at the time and it was $79,500,000 last summer.

Star salaries grew by a lot more than 9% in that span.

An 8 year extension for a power forward is getting pretty dicey. grimace

I said yes, cause the cap hit is fair, but that term.. geez.

So many folks think Kadri was a 30 goal. scorer because he was great centre. He got a lot of production being a the Left Winger on the PP, replacing Hyman playing with Matthews and Nylander. Not. sure if his playing time on the PP has gone down or reality has set in, Kadri really isn't a 30 goal guy.
Marner contract. In the past guys coming off thier ELCs wouldn't be getting UFA money, which is what Stone got...UFA money. Heck the best player in the league starts his 9.5m contract next year Kucherov. Marner shouldn't be getting 9.5m but for some reason the Leaf like to give out premium contracts to their RFAs. Nylander was overpay at 7m a year and no way Matthews shouldn't be getting paid the as the 2nd highest player in the league. Who can figure these contracts?

Amazing, isn't it? Pasta, Marchand, and Bergeron all signed long term at incredible bargains. As far as Marner goes, he's obviously much younger than Stone, but Stone is one of the top defensive Forwards in the game and he's about to set career highs offensively, too. Marner should've been extended last summer and now it's gonna cost TOR $9.5M+ AAV. Dubas better get him for the full 8 years at least.

Dubas opened up Pandora's box when he way overpaid Matthews. In my opinion, Marner is more valuable than Matthews, so where does that leave them? In a cap crunch...that's where.

Stone is 2 years younger than Lucic was when EDM signed him. Stone is one of the best defensive players in the league. Stone will never be a 50 point player playing in the VGK top 6. He could be an 80 point guy who defends other team's best scorers. Btw...Lucic is a 5G and 17 point guy being paid to be a 50-60 point guy who creates time/space for McDavid. Lucic isn't worth $1M let alone $6M. There would've been multiple teams willing to pay $9.5M AAV to Stone had he become a UFA. Wait and see how much Panarin gets.
