This Might Work part 1

Created by: swinny
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2019
Published: Mar. 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kapanen: Hope like hell offering a 1 year deal is something that will fly...... his pay day comes next season after Marleau expires.

McQuaid at $1.5 mil over 2? I think it's ballpark, but that is open to debate too.

Johnsson I think is on a decent bridge deal, given his lack of arbitration right and all, but again, the amount could be a little short. All about buying into keeping the roster together longterm. Does buy into that?

  1. Nutivaara, Markus
Additional Details:
Leafs End: Moving Zaitsev here we will call what it is: a cap dump. Albeit I beleive he is a servicable defenseman, he is not that great at $4.5 million. Don't think many will debate that. Selling a change of scenery might do him some good.

Connor Brown is part of the price in the said cap dump. First, he can be a solid 15-20 goal/40 pt guy. He needs ice time. He is not going to get that as a Leaf. Secondly, he is a cap casualty moving forward.

2nd round pick: another part of the price for the cap dump. And since the Jackets moved everything to try for a wildcard spot, this should grease a wheel.

Nutivaara: less money, and perhaps a slight upgrade on Zaitsev. But, he is young enough to fit in long term, and inexpensive enough that he can be a movable asset down the line if need be.

Jackets perspective:

Zaitsev: a body that replaces Nutivaara

Brown: he is young enough to present a long term solution offensivley - and I argue the Jackets need that (why else to you sell your soul for Dzingel and Duchene??) A great top 9 forward, and arugably top 6 potential given the opportunity. With the number of UFAs the Jackets have, a good contract and some control has is enticing.

2nd rounder: Jackets need picks. End of discussion.

That type of trade works.....one of few posted. Still not sure if it works for CBJ. They could keep Nutivaara and have 4 m to spend elsewhere. Don't think the Leafs can win with McQuaid and Holl as regular. No I think bigger cap has to jettisoned.

This is very well thought out, and explained. I think that for the same reasons as Brown, Kadri will be moved as well as Zaitsev. Kadri deserves, and would justify with performance, more than third-line ice time, and lots of teams could use a #2 center (particularly Carolina and Minnesota).

How's this......Kadri and Brown for Nativaara. Leafs rid themselves of 6.7 minus 2.7 and .8 Brown replacement. A saving of 3.8m. CBJ gets a needed centre....if Duchene leaves and a second NHLer.
Nylander goes to centre and Leafs are strengthen at RHD with both Zaitsev, Nativaara and Ozhigankov. If Marleau retires, the Leafs are very cap compliant.

I REALLY like the trade idea, I've looked at teams like CBJ and NYR in similar AGM trades I've done and think it works really well for both teams.
I like the signings for the most part. As much as I would love to have Ennis back at that number, for his sake, I really hope he can go get paid somewhere else and rewarded for rejuvenating himself this season. I also can't see Dubas going out to get a McQuaid or McQuaid-like player, BUT I can definitely see him going after a more Dubas-type veteran RD for a similar number (not sure who it would be off the top of my head). Two other small things: I think Petan will be 50-100K less but on a one-way deal and Johnsson does actually have arbitration rights so I can see that resulting in a one year deal instead of two. That would also put pressure on both him and Kappy to compete for a share of Marleau's money.

Doesn't work on a long term deal but a short term deal yes.

Honestly, that blueline is thin regardless. McQuaid, at the very least, bridges a year until we get to Lilegren. Never going to claim that back end is going to win; but thinking long term you keep that top 6 together.

That cap hit represents 11.5% of the overall cap (give or take a percentage point), which puts him in Eichel territory in those terms. Being a winger, one could argue, decreases the cap hit.

You maybe right too. Marner, by far, is one of the most difficult contracts for me to gauge in years.

There maybe a framework there, but Kadri AND Brown for Nutivaara is really steep.

Moving Kadri as a single entity to a Carolina (as has been suggested in another comment) for say a Pesce, would certainly make more sense imo.

But Leaf stilt have to rid themselves of about 9m of cap this year. Marleau retiring makes it easier, but if not, now you're looking at trading big cap without getting any back in return.

Kadri and Brown is a huge... no.... HUGE overpayment for Nurivaara. Framework is there sure. But some else needs to come the other way. That's the sort of deal Ferguson Jr. would have made.... and I have read enough of your stuff to know your better than that.

The money is fine if it’s very short term
