A Summer of Restraint

Created by: DrumMan44
Team: 2019-20 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2019
Published: Mar. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
While the temptation to bring back Artemi Panarin is there, I think a more restrained approach would be best for the long-term help of the team.

UFA Signings:

Dzingel - Adds some scoring depth and a great weapon to play with Toews and Kane
Tanev - Brought in to help cement the bottom 6.

Trades -
Take advantage of the impending cap squeeze for Vegas and take a flyer on Haula. See how he performs after knee surgery. If he under-performs then his contract will fall off the books in time for Debrincat and Strome extensions

Forsling and Dahlstrom both will not see more then $1.25M max and likely less on bridge deals.

Kampf will get $1.25M and absolutely has earned the right to be in the lineup.

Perlini will also be in the lineup at around $1M on a bridge and negates the need for either Tanev or Haula.

I don't mind this. However the cap-hits are a little inflated of everyone you re-signed. Dahlstrom will make 800-900k, Kampf will be less than 1.5 and Forsling will also be less than 1.5. I think in order to obtain Dzingel, Tanev, and Haula you have to get rid of one or both of Anisimov and Saad. Especially with DeBrincat, Strome, Kahun, Crawford, and Gustafsson's contracts expiring after next year. Great depth on offense but the defense looks atrocious still. I wouldn't even consider re-signing Forsling, but packaging him in a deal for top-4 dman to bridge the gap for Boqvist and Beaudin.

I think Stan is going to be much more aggressive with consecutive seasons missing the playoffs. No reason not to go all in for the next 3 or 4 seasons.

Honestly the hawks are closer to the playoffs than you think. If they keep playing like they are right now down the stretch it would absolutely not suprise me to see them right at the edge.

It's highly unrealistic. Being 5 points out basically means they have to finish with 3 more wins than all teams ahead of them. With the schedule, it's possible, with their streaky play, it's tough to imagine.

Take that game in hand and give 2 points (I know it’s not guaranteed) 3 points don’t seem insurmountable...

Define all in though? I doubt Panarin comes back to Chicago and the hawks surely need a top two line winger so what are the options? Hawks have the room to bring Panarin and Dzingel which would be amazing but how do they do that without moving Anisimov or Saad and then protect all these players during the expansion draft while still leaving money to sign Kahun, Strome, Cat and Gus?

Is resigning Gus necessary when Beaudin steps in? I don't think so. Duchene would fit nicely as he can play wing 5V5 and center the 2nd PP unit.

I think Gus does make sense until Boqvist, Beaudin and Mitchell are locks.

Putting Duchene on the wing would be a waste though. He's a much better 2C then Strome but are the Hawks willing to move Strome to the 3C and trade Anisimov? That's about the only way Duchene comes to Chicago.

I'd be open to 3 solid scoring lines. The Pittsburgh model has done well for many teams in the past few seasons. Winnipeg is doing the same thing right now with Scheifele Hayes and Little down the middle.

Don't disagree that Toews, Duchene and Strome would be great, but you're back to square 1 trying to find appropriate wingers to make 3 scoring lines. The Hawks have a lot of 3rd and 4th line wingers, while some have upside and some don't, but really only 2 solid front 2 line wingers in Kane and Cat. Saad is borderline right there, and Kahun has upside, but Caggs is not one of those IMO. Sure he looked really good for a handful of games, but he's not a long term solution on the front 2 lines. So Hawks are still in desperate need of a top 2 line winger if they bring in Duchene.
