Given what many around here expects the price for Marner to be ($10.5-11.5), I'd say the Leafs match without question. I think it'd have to be something outrageous for them not to.

Leafs would match and move out complementary players Brown, Kadri, Zaitsev, Hyman (whatever is necessary) and then sign some UFA help and move in prospects from the Marlies
core is going to stay in Toronto
BTW Marner would have to sign that offer sheet

If the Leafs are only going to offer him $9-10 he might just sign it. Leafs can match, sure, but they will have some reorganizing to do in a short time-frame, lowering the value of their other players.

I think, regardless of what Marner signs for, they're going to have to do that anyway. The unfortunate part for them is that their back end is weak (right now). I'm assuming the hope is that they will have Sandin/Liljegren jump up next year, which fills a couple of holes, and they're both on ELC's, so that's a win.

Very curious to see what they end up doing, but IMO, Nylander moving for picks/prospects in a Kessel-type deal (when he was with Boston) is their best course of action. Maybe try to get a 1st+NHL ready dman on an ELC. Zaitsev can obviously be moved, but it'll probably cost them more than they're willing to give up, and after Marleau's deal is done, they're not in that bad of shape anymore (assuming the cap goes to $83 next season, and then rises another 2-3 mil the following year).

this theory assumes that 10 other teams with RFA's will not have the same problem
Leafs have a management team intelligent enough to work around this and assets that other rebuilding teams will want in fair trade
after scooping a high end talent like Marner, on top of other contracts, that team may also be cap exposed
....and remember, what goes around comes around - probably why offer sheets are rare Mr. Provorov-Sanheim

Big difference here...Flyers have the space to be able to match no problem.

With this free agent market, I would much rather over pay and sign Skinner, Panarin (not much of an overlay) or Duchene than give up 4 first rounders for Marner

That Sandin and Lijigren D prospects are looking very good so if they can move Z it's very good for them. Im not saying that both of them are going to be ready but I see them ready by the year after and man if they project to be they are in good shape

I’ll take a really young superstar over the late 1sts we will have going forward.

For sure. The whole Toronto market over-hypes a lot of their prospects, but these two look really good, so hopefully for their sake they can make it happen. I can see Sandin starting with the big club, with Liljegren ready by mid season. They probably want to see him play some serious minutes (Which he has started to), but also to stay healthy for a period of time. Hard to make the jump up and play 75+ games plus playoffs when your career high is 44.

DD, come on???? You would rather take Marner over Panarin and 4 first round picks (hopefully the last pick in each of the next four drafts)??

Our cupboards are stocked and late 1sts are no guarantee. I will take the better player, which is Marner, who has his entire prime left.
