The Reality of Marners asking price vs the Leafs

Created by: BC98
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 19, 2019
Published: Mar. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs offering 9+over 3 years or 6 7 8 years avoiding the 4 5 UFA years.

Marners camp will be looking for 11.6 mill over 5 equaling the Matthews deal which is hard to argue with. Thats a large negotiating cap.

I believe that an offer sheet of 13 to 14 mill over 7 years will come if a deal cant be reached. With that being said Leafs management has some work to do with the cap because i believe that the contract will be 11.5 mill over 8 years. To say thats not a fair deal for the leading scorer on the team is pretty naive of us Leaf fans. Tavares Matthews and Nylander never took a discount so why would Marner.

Also it looks like kappanen and johnsson will be 20 goal scorers this season. They will be looking for 4 mill with some term. Some fans and Leafs management will say " you only did it for 1 year" and kappy and Johnsson will say " yes but we did it so pay us"

Its very clear that there will be massive changes to the Leafs bottom 6 this offseason due players asking prices. It is a huge test for Leafs management to manage these assets correctly.

The 4 year term is something that has never been achieved by a player off a 3 year elc in the history of the cap, why does Kapanen deserve it?

You would have to ask him. He can ask all he wants. This post is about asking price.

To be honest it may turn out to be a bargin contract for both guys at 4 mill over 4. The reality is the leafs can't afford them. No matter what theysign for

Term is pretty important when it comes to asking price

Think the Leafs management have failed with their two big RFAs signings so far Nylander and Matthews. Leafs paid too much. I'm sure Marner camp will point to those players as comparisons. Gee the Leafs should be comparing to other RFAs like Pastrnak and the best player in the league Kucherov starts his 9.5m contract.

Tavares did take a discount to play here, Toronto offered him less than the other teams he interviewed with.

Kappy’s contract slid. He is ufa in 3 years. So a 4 year deal would buy 1 year ufa.

No team can compare to Florida state tax. Tampa has a huge advantage in the cap world. The point is there are only two teams in the NHL that can sign Kucherov to a 9.5 mill contract and its FLA and Tampa. He actually makes more take home cash at 9.5 mill cap hit then mcdavid does at 12.5 mill. Crazy how the league allows this type of thing to take place

As I have stated endlessly, this tax difference seems to be an infatuation with CapFriendly fans. When NBA or MLB players get traded to the Raptors/Jays they don't demand more pay for a tax premium.(because their is non or vary little).
So, the personal tax rates are kinda meaningless. By how you figure that big difference in in 9.5m and 12.5m Even if we the tax difference was 11%. (as stated in CapFriendly) It's 1m difference not 3m. You didn't seem to include the tax Kucherov has to pay when he plays out of state or in cities that have city income tax.
Crazy the league allows it you say. What's next, the league compensates players for every hour they have for air travel....in effect played playing in San Jose are paid less per hour than a player living in NYC or probably any team in the Eastern Conference.

Salary cap is not the same as other pro sports so it cant be compaired. You are right with 11% as stated in cap friendly but its all in how FLA teams can structure their contracts to players. In Tampas case they are paying the bulk of the 9.5 mill as bonus and not salary so the cap hit on the surface is 9.5mill but the contract is stuctured in a way where only 2 mill is taxed as salary as preformance bonuses in the state of FLA is non taxable. This is not the case in Canada or other states.

So this is what i mean when i say CRAZY the league allows this. Teams should be caped on how much bonus/state tax break they can give a player. Everyone should be on an even playing field. Isnt that what the cap is for?

But your entire assumption is based upon the personal tax rates posted. Why are they relevant? Don't seem affect other pro sports as shown by Raptors and Blue Jays. But as long as the personal ta rate seems to the tax bible that some CapFriendly fans believe .....so be it.

But it does affect other pro sports ie basketball and MLB. Its mentioned less due to how business is done in those leagues. In the NHL salary cap personal taxes played a part in the stamkos contract and kucharov contract. This has been talked about all over TSN and sportsnet. Mainly due to The Marner Contact talks. Bob mackenzie on overdrive this week referred to the advantage tampa has due to state taxes. He said this because people were trying to compare the future Marner deal to Kucharovs contract. He stated " it cant be compared due to state tax " .

Kucherov is making 1 mill in salary this year with 11 mill in potential bonuses equaling a potential 12 mill this year. He will be taxed on 1 mill in the state of FLA not the potential 12 mill he will recieve if he hit all bonuses.

This is how it works. tampa is able to keep the cap hit low while the player doesnt sacrifice any money. So its a win win situation for both parties.

The player still gets his 11-12 mill per year that hes worth but the cap hit remains low.
