Turning over a New Leaf

Created by: Murph
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2019
Published: Mar. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lots of picks in play to do this and maybe more picks and or prospects required. IMO Kapanen would cost more to sign as opposed to Johannson, and Leafs need to solidify Left side. Solidifies D and if Dermott and Holl have to play together (they have before) with limited minutes, D looks good otherwise. Zaitsev helps Sens get to Cap Floor ans can play top 4 minutes for them. Sharpen your knives.

The worse reason team getting the floor is trading for a player that might not really want, especially a player with a long term deal. Dozens of better ways for Ottawa to. spend their money...and I find Zaitsev OK. Holl and Pateryn on the top six? Maybe that shows Zaitsev is needed.

    Ok lets break this down.

Zaitsev Trade: I don't think your getting a 3rd rounder for him. Maybe a 5th and a low level prospect at most.

Pateryn Trade: Value seems ok... However, I think it would cost a 2nd and a 5th.

Brown Trade: Sounds about right. If you trade him to a team who is high in the standings, you could probably get a 3rd thats around 60th Overall.

Now here is the big one...

Kapanen Trade: Yes Kasperi is good. But, he isn't worth a 1 for 1 deal for Pesce. Heck, I dont even think Carolina would do Nylander for Pesce. A Pesce to Toronto deal would probably look something like this.

    To Toronto
    Brett Pesce, 2020 3rd Rounder

    To Carolina
    Kapanen and Kadri

Holl is not an NHL player. I mean technically he is but he shouldn't be...

I love the Carolina trade. I was a big fan of Pateryn during the summer but he's turned into close to a bust in Minnesota. I think there are better alternatives. Zaitsev trade would be good for Toronto IF and only IF we can find a reasonable replacement.

Anybody else notice that the game-winning shootout goal in Vancouver's victory the other night was scored by Josh Leivo?

Leivo is a good player. Should have been in the lineup ahead of guys like Brown and Lindholm when he was here.

I respectfully disagree with your evaluation of Brett Pesce.

He's a right-handed Jonas Brodin -- primarily a defensive asset. As such, Kadri alone would be an overpayment, and two or three years from now a Kapanen-for-Pesce deal might look like Hall-for-Larsson 2.0. (Not that Kapanen = Hall, but because Larsson > Pesce.). And Carolina needs scoring, especially right-handed scoring, at least as much as Toronto needs a quality RhD.

I'm sorry about the dust-up you got into with @DocArin0 : he's posted some very interesting team-prospect rosters and I find his insight as valuable as yours.

Well, maybe the next good team or comment he posts will change your mind.

But for the record, in case I'm coming across as "holier-than-thou," I have a list of half-a-dozen clowns I feel the same way about, and the reason why I'm keeping the list is to remind myself not to respond to anything they write.

Thanks for the comments. As I said in my description, picks and prospects may need to be added or tweaked. Who would not like an upgrade from Holl, but the objective was also to be within the cap. I think Pateryn plays better in the Eastern conference, and I also think Holl has more to show when paired with a veteran who allows him to play his natural side. He has been okay the last 2 games, but it is stressful when you sit in the pressbox and only play when the Coach feels he has has no options. Dermott and Holl were the top pairing Marlies before Dermott moved up. Unfortunately the Salary Cap does not allow too many upgrades until Marleau is off the books.

    Whoa..... hold up.

I like Pesce as much as the next guy. However, I too was looking at a Pesce for Kapanen swap.... pretty much straight up. Maybe the Leafs need some tinsel on the tree, but that sure as f@#% isn't Kadri.

    Breaking it down....

Pesce: emerging as a fabulous stay at home defender who is young, a very good contract and term. A guy you would throw out there for 3 minutes at a time with a one goal lead kinda guy. He's good. Really good. I would have him on my World Cup or Olympic Team good.

Kapanen: 20 goals, 40 points in his first full season. Steady production during Nylander's hold out playing top 6 minutes. Has rounded into a helluva two-way playing and can skate, a serious short handed threat. He's good. Ceiling in the right situation I say 30 goals, 70 points. Granted he will not do that with the Leafs.

So given my assesment, Pesce for Kapanen isn't that far off from a valuation point really (Dubas isn't Chiarelli).......

Pesce for Kapanen and a conditional 2020 2nd would be closer to the truth. The conditional based on Kapanen's production.

Having said that, the cheaper route is Brown for VanReimsdyk...... persoannly I think Trevor is groasly underrated.
