More one way contracts from the leafs. Dubas is doing a very good job of picking and choosing with these one way deals to help the leafs cap next season.

At least he isnt failing on one way depth contracts......

I wonder if he will pull it on Ozhiganov also....

Great extra depth and another player who will likely exceed expectations. Money like this keeps as much of the core intact as possible and worst case it can easily be buried in the minors.

Never got a good chance in the Peg. Hopefully he gets more of a shot in Toronto.

Bargain Bin Dubas at it again. Around his overpayed players he fills out with AHL talent and the defense is still a mess!

For the record, I think this contract AAV is lower than his previous one (demoted value). Good for TOR to land Petan on such a discount, but if he ends up on the waiver wire, don't expect to find him on the Marlies roster!

I don't see the big deal on this one. This is a guy who struggled on the NHL level. There is a reason he came at a league minimum. He could have probably signed this deal toward the end of free agency and looked over the market first to see what else was available.

Goodbye Ennis, your roster spot is now filled for next season.

The Leafs will have 2/3rd of their players with NHL talent and 1/3rd fringe AHL talent.

Dubas has done a good job with the contacts with fringe NHLers. Wish he had practiced on these minor deals, before negotiating with big name RFAs, because he (Leafs management) lost of Nylander and Matthews contracts.

Will take a lot of 750k contracts to bring in those 600k and 4M

I think you mean they're still young and developing ....

25 = Rielly (already a #1/2)
29 = Muzzin (a #2/3 but not young)
28 = Gardiner(a #2/3 but not young)
22 = Dermott (already a #3/4)
26 = Zaitsev (already a #4/5)
25 = Oziganov (already a #5/6)
26 = Holl (already a #5/6)

19 = Liljegren (potential #1/2)
19 = Sandin (potential #1/2)

24 = Rosen (potential #2/3)
21 = Duszak (potential #2/3)
20 = Hollowell (potential #2/3)

23 = Borgman (potential #3/4)
20 = Rasanen (potential #3/4)
19 = Krall (potential #3/4)

19 = Gordeev (potential #4/5)
21 = Lindgren (potential #4/5)
20 = Greenway (potential #4/5)

The Leafs are top 5 in defensive depth + top 5 in defensive prospects.

They just need a #1 RD.

Rielly is a 2/3

Morgan Rielly:

Games = 74
Goals = 20
Assists = 48
Points = 68
P/M = +27

PPG = 0.92

Rielly will be top 10 in Norris Voting this year .... and there's a very good chance he gets a top 3 nomination.

There are 31 #1 defense in the league .... he's one of the youngest and one of the best.

I'll leave you with the math.

1 season with 1 of the best forward groups in the league doesn't make him a #1, it also doesn't help that his TOI is around 23 minutes, usually around what a #2-3 gets, it shows babcock doesnt trust him like a #1, and rightfully so, hes average at best defensively and there are mamy Dmen in the league that are better than rielly but arent even the best on their team

"He's average at best"
"it shows babcock doesnt trust him"

Sorry - I didn't realize I was speaking to a child.

He has the highest TOI on the team.

Babcock doesn't give any superstars as much TOI as other coaches do. That's just how he coaches.

Matthews + Marner + Tavares all have lower ATOI's than every other player with comparable points per game.

That disproves your point.

I'm not even going to touch your "average at best defensively comment though"

Only correct person on here is Rielly. He's a clear #1 Defender. Everyone else on here you are overrating.

This is more accurate. Some guys could be better than what I predict, but the reality is most of these guys won't even become Full Time NHL defenders.

Yeah ....

The D leading the AHL in points is a potential #5 .... and the D with the best D+1 stats in decades is a potential #3 ......

Just because you put up points in the AHL means absolutely nothing. There are tons of PPG AHL players that will never play an NHL game in their Career.
Once again, points don't mean everything.
