Because he's severely overrated.

Because it seems he sucks. I know +/- statistics are not very popular, but his numbers are disastrous.

It probably has something to do with -42 +/-

Leddy was a -42 last season as well and Trotz turned him around to a -2. I think he's got some talent so if a team buys on a discount it might not be the worst idea in the world

Buffalo has ruined him. They forced him into a role where he's playing at least 25 minutes a night far before he was ready for a role like that. He wasn't eased into the NHL and developed properly, and that's all Buffalo's fault.

Who ever lands Risto for below value will be much better for it. Buffalo fans (and other teams fans) blame Risto but in truth, Risto is put in an un-envious position. He's not a top pairing dman but because Buffalo has no one else, he's put there and expected to be a top pairing dman....

Risto is good, he's just not good enough to turn a turd pile into gold. That's not his fault. He's not perfect by any stretch but take any top 4 dman and plop him into a 25 mins a night role with a porous d-core and backup goalie galore situation and what do you expect to happen? Risto should be playing 20 mins a night playing behind a top pairing who take the most difficult minutes. Then you'd be happy with him because that is where he slots.

I think Buffalo should be looking to keep there good dmen and adding more, not get rid of them.

Defensive mistakes, but like you mentioned that can be turned around.

THIS! Exactly this. He has played 20+ minutes a night on a bad Buffalo team since he was 19 years old. Dahlin is lucky to have Risto there as they bring him in because Risto had no one when he came into the league. Dahlin is another level dont get me wrong but Risto has been miscast his entire career.

Risto coming to the Island could be a disaster or a genius idea. Either he doesn't mesh with the system and is a giant liability or fits in and accepts his role and excels. With a team that come out of nowhere and has a really good thing going, I'd rather not trade for him, especially if our best offensive prospect is going the other way. But it's an interesting idea nonetheless

I think the “development rush” is a convenient narrative to explain why a top pick didn’t work out. Fact is he is just the player that he is. He has defensive zone deficiencies but the coaching staff still “thinks” he’s a good defensive player and plays minutes and matchups that he just shouldn’t.

He should be a 60% OZone start 2nd pair RHD that plays big PP minutes and is above average in that regard. He is mis-cast, but still holds significant value, so a perfect trade candidate especially given the addition of Montour.
