Yes they can by that 5.3 for Horton also counts in the summer as they can’t LTIR him in summer. Although I’m sure the leafs will find some obscure loophole to get around it

You can't trade someone for a year after matching an offer sheet. You can match and then trade others though

If the Leafs match, they match the actual contract, which would most likely include a NMC or NTC. they couldn’t trade him at all. That is why at some point, if the offer is high enough and the Leafs don’t want to blow up their roster to match/keep him, they would just have to let him go for the picks,

If you match, you can't trade him for a year. If it's that much more than what you want to pay...maybe you just take the picks and spend your Marner money elsewhere.

The Leafs don't make the LTIR rules. Horton has zero affect on the cap. All these years why do folks teams are cap punished for having LTIR players. Yes, he is on LTIR this summer which provides cap relief, just like other LTIR players all year round.

I may be mistaken but I don't think you can trade a player for a certain amount of time after matching an offersheet. Maybe until January 1st?

Also a player being on LTIR isn't exactly as straightforward as it sounds. You don't get to just add a the value of an LTIR players cap to the total cap. You designate another players cap hit, up to the total amount of the ltir'ed player as being the replacement. If you have a player who makes roughly the same it essentially washes. But there are a lot of fine details which are much more complicated then most realize.

no. need to apologize. When folks see so many LTIR trades they kinda get caught up in the excitement of trading one. 95% of the time, LTIR don't affect the cap at all. They just affect sometimes when a team can pay its performance bonuses.
