Karlsson and Co

Created by: deleted_x_t_213213
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 28, 2019
Published: Mar. 28, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a continuation of Karlsson it is possible. K is signed in summer of 2019; Kadri, Nylander, and Zaitsev are traded that summer.
Accumulation of drafts picks including 5 first rounders in 2021 and 2022, which can replace Nylander, Kadri, Dermott and Zaitsev through proper scouting and developing, aquiring one of the top RHD in the league. Sad to see Nylander and Kadri go, but if it means acquiring Karlsson its worth it. Schenn is an excellent third line centre and should put up points with Bracco on his line. Marcus Johanssen would have 3rd line roles for two years until 2021Leafs sign Schenn. Muzzin is a perfect defensive partner for Karlsson allowing him to be creative in the offensive zone and covering mistakes. Rielly will be an excellent mentor to Liljegren, and Sandin and Rosen can provide an abundance of offence. The Leafs have close to 17 million in cap space to keep their core players together (Andersen, Sandin, Liljegren, Rosen, Bracco) so it should be okay.

couple problems. Blues are working on extending Schenn, and with how blues are playing I don't see him leaving. Cap is 83 Million not 86M. You also have to give up a first to get rid of Zaitsev. He is a liability for a team.

No its 2020-2021, cap will go up another 3 million. Will one million retained he's not a liability. If the Leafs can trade Phaneuf with no salary retained they can do the same with Zaitsev, whose much better.

On top of that, you signed Karlsson to 8 years which insinuates he was traded before free agency. If that was the case it would have to be a sign and trade and you would most certainly be needing to probably send a package of Nylander/ Dermott and a high pick back San Jose way.

No, added as free agent, 8 years x 11.

I think only teams that own his rights can sign 8 year deals.

For the Islanders he would be a liability cap wise since he isn't needed in the Isles Organization. Meaning not in Toronto.

Only San Jose has rights to an 8 Year Deal. He has 7 Year deal as max for a new team. Because the Leafs don't have the rights to Karlsson.

If so, then 7 years should do it.

San Jose is not letting him walk, if he doesn't resign. He will get traded probably with a sign and trade agreement in place.

Why the hell would the leafs want schenn as their 3rd line centre for that price tag when we can keep Kadri for way cheaper or just keep Nylander (who is way more valuable and younger) Makes no sense

He will be a UFA, but 8-year deal is still the rights of his former team no matter if he is RFA or UFA.

Hmm Highly doubt that. Can't normally trade a UFA right after the season that would just waste assets for the team he could be going to without being traded.

You can up until July 1st. I agree highly unlikely, but I think it's highly unlikely he goes to free agency. With Thorton and Pavelski coming off the books. I think he gets re-signed.

But that makes the team less good Pavelski is probably staying anyway. The team won't be nearly as good.

Making room for Karlsson's contract in 2019, that's the main reason.
