Description
So let's say some team who figures they need scoring offer sheets him 13x5 and we let him go.

The thing is not only is he gone and we have more cap, but we have 4 firsts to trade.

This team has lost a very dynamic almost superstar at forward. But it has a much better cap set up and a TONNE of tradeable assets

Match the Marner offer sheet and dump Nylander. Not many 21 year olds flirting with 100 points. Marner is in the elite young group that includes McDavid, Mathews and Point. Can't let him get away.
$4.5M is too much cap space for a #6 Dman - Dump Zaitsev.

And how many #1 picks turn into a 21 year old 100 point player?
Just because TOR got Mathews and Marner - don't think that it happens every draft.
Don't trade the cow for magic beans.

Sure. But cap efficiency matters. If someone stupid overpays him like above you take your 4 firsts.

Marner's contract extension won't go on long enough for someone to have the ability to offer sheet him. & even if by some bizarro world you live in, that happens, he has to sign it. He won't.

Nah I’d trade Zaitsev, Nylander, Kadri and Marleau. GrumpyOldManis right the odds of finding a player anywhere near Marners talent is very unlikely. If the leafs even let a player like Kap or AJ go they will have lots of cap to fill their lineup with good supporting players. Depending on the team and where they pick Nylander and Kadri could easily fetch a first each and Zaitsev could get a 3rd or 4th depending on How late or early in the round the pick is. Marleau would be good for a team like Arizona or Ottawa to but out. He would only cost just over 400k for 2 years but take 6M in cap the first year and 0 the next. Might cost Toronto a late first or a 2nd and a B level prospect but it would be worth it.

Marleau isn't waiving his NMC. TOR is his best chance to get his name on the Cup.
Marner is a special talent.
But it's laughable to speculate that any player would not sign a $10M+ offer sheet.
Much less a 21 year old that doesn't have $10M in the bank already.
Players would sign with OTT for $10M / year.

IF a team overpays him, it's going be for 7 year offer sheet since it's going to cost four first rounders. I while it definitely would help the Leafs cap next season and after that, I would really like to know what team would offer sheet Marner so much more than he deserves......And to put that team as the posted roster to see if it cap possible.

So I was thinking of it and honestly I was struggling.

I feel like the only teams that occur to me are Dallas (never afraid to make a big splash and cant seem to get over the hump), buffalo (I think buffalo tries to get Toronto to match but just pay more than they want. Ie Toronto negotiates firm at 9.5 mil. Buffalo offersheeted him to Matthews contract. Toronto matches unhappily, but buffalo being in our division is happy with matching as it hurts our cap). Detroit ( but frankly they need centers so if offersheetinf anyone it should be Point), nyi.

The thing is as long as panarin remains unsigned offersheeting marner/Rantanen seems like a huge waste

But as you ilustrated by indicating Detroit and Buffalo as suitors.....those could be lottery picks (maybe even. Dallas). Generally it's poor teams that have cap space. So that's why I think there. are so few offer sheets. teams would have to overpay and risk losing lottery picks. And then in the future when they have to sign their RFA, they have a overpaid one who they pursued who on the team.

Imagine this scenario. Marleau retires so the Leaf are cap compliant with hi trade. Teams offer sheet Marner, Leafs decline. With that 10 m, Leafs sign a very good UFA such as Karlsson, (doesn't have be in 2019) and still have those four first rounders. You could argue the Leafs would be better on the ice in 2020 with that UFA , and with those picks in the future,.

Ok...I'm a well known Marner super-fan. Have loved this kid since his London Knights days and was stoked when the leafs drafted him. I was battling friends who were pissed the leafs didn't move up a spot to get Strome because he was the big #1c we didn't have since Sundin.

But if someone is offering $13m you can't match that. I'm not sure how much more over $12m the leafs would match.

IMO anything that starts with an AAV of $12m and below the leafs don't hesitate to match.

As for the speculation that Marner would never sign an offer sheet....what is that theory based on? That he's a Toronto kid? If negotiations are within $1m, then no, IMO he's not going to sign anything. But if they are far apart, the offer sheet could get used to force the leafs' hands.

I've been told point blank by someone with ties to the family that other GM's are looking at offer sheeting him...not to necessarily land him on their team...but to land him in free agency in 4 years....meaning...if Marner isn't happy with the offer from Toronto, other GM's have already indicated to his agent that they'll put an $11m+ offer sheet on the table for 4 years...knowing that the leafs will match it...Marner gets to stay in Toronto...but now his contract ends as soon as he's eligible for free agency. So now the leafs are in a worst case scenario as far as AAV and term.

Offer sheets never have to actually get offered or signed, but the knowledge that they could dictate unfavourable terms is the leverage that an RFA like Marner has in these negotiations...

That's why I laugh at anyone who wants to compare his # to a Kucherov or Kane or anyone else. And why, when he signs in Toronto, it will probably be for a bit more than we all anticipate....and then know-it-alls on here will blame Dubas for caving in without understanding all the variables that come into play.
