2016-2017 - Escaping Krejci's contract

Created by: BBB22
Team: 2016-17 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2016
Published: Jun. 2, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Datsyuk chooses not to come back to the NHL, the Bruins are one of the few teams with the cap space and resources to absorb the Datsyuk cap hit for next season. In doing this, it would relieve them of overpaying Krejci for the next 5 years, and going into 2017-18 they would have plenty of cap space to resign Marchand, Pastrnak, & Spooner. It would also allow the Bruins to play more younger guys for the entire season to see what they truly have. It would be a creative way to get out from the Krejci contract, as I don't think there would be much of an appetite for any team to take on his contract in a trade this off-season. Perhaps this is the exception. Or maybe Detroit wouldn't do this deal, and just suck it up for the one year and get zero performance out of Datsyuk's $7.5 mill on their payroll.

I doubt Don Sweeney has the balls to do this though. And I'm not positive it is the right way to go, I'm just thinking out loud.

Perhaps trade Krejci to MIN for Brodin and RECEIVE a draft pick as well? Saves you giving up a 1st. Also gives you space to add a complimentary player like Berglund or Lehtera as insurance for the kids.

Why would Minnesota do that? If they got Krejci in return for Brodin they would increase their cap hit by $3 mill., and have no money left to sign Dumba, and others. Brodin for a younger top 9 forward is attractive to them so they can relieve themselves of Brodin's $4 mill. to resign their other guys.

Krejci is a legit 1B center and wrong if you think the bruins need to dump him. He's not that overpaid

A wing doesn't really help the Wild, they need a centre. Bergeron is too $$$ for them already against the cap.

I think the Wild would pull the trigger on that deal. Vatrano is only 22 years old and scored 44 goals between the AHL & NHL last year. Combine that with a late first rounder - that would be a good deal for Brodin. They could move those pieces to another team for a center - or use Vatrano at center, as he has played mostly there in the AHL last year. I would like to see Boston keep him, but if they sign Vesey, that presents a log jam at left wing (Marchand, Vesey, & Belesky). Also, Bergeron is untouchable. I think any team in the league would pay him that salary he has.

As for Krejci - I think if they could unload him, they would. $7.25 mill for his production and age, is no bargain. Especially with Spooner coming up and the price he costs. If Spooner were to take over Krejci's minutes next year, he would probably out pace Krejci in production. And you could take the money you save and allocate it elsewhere.
