Gillis goes Armageddon

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 3, 2019
Published: Apr. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Katz, pressured by McDavid's recent comments, realizes the only way to appease his megastar is to purge //everything// from this organization. Nicholson? Gone. The OBC? Gone. Everyone associated with a management position, coaching, scouting, and player development is handed their walking papers.

Enter Mike Gillis, the new-era general manager this team so desperately needs. Ray Whitney is pulled out of Carolina to serve in a POHO role, and is tasked with researching and investing into sports science, analytics, and serving as a figurehead. Gillis is known to be testy with the media, so Whitney can handle interviews and events that the GM necessarily wouldn't need to handle.

The tall task for Gillis in this scenario - explicitly for his first summer on the job - is cleaning out as much crap off this roster and giving McDavid something that resembles an NHL-calibre roster to play with.

1. Two small trades are made within the Atlantic Division in order to upgrade on Gagner and bring a former teammate of McDavid's on board.
2. The drama surrounding the Lucic saga comes to an end with a fairly lateral move with Montreal: garbage for garbage, and to compensate for the extra year of misery, Montreal upgrades one of their picks.
3. With a substantial lack of picks, and Kekelainen keeping his job (barely), Edmonton offers to replenish some of the Blue Jackets' spent assets for the cost of Wennberg. Russell returns to his former team at a reduced price in order to make the cap work.
4. Benning and Manning are moved out to free up additional space.

The UFA class this season isn't particularly strong, and the turmoil that has surrounded Edmonton for most of the season is likely to chase away bigger names. Players looking for another opportunity to stay in the league or a pay raise that their former team is unlikely to be able to afford are Edmonton's main targets. Goaltending is likely to be properly solved next season, and the majority of contracts signed this summer are less than 2 years in term and are not meant to be permanent fixes.

Here's hoping that actual NHL depth, a healthy Sekera and Puljujarvi, an upgraded PK, and an improved defence is enough to turn the Oilers into a legitimate wildcard+ contender for next season.

Not going to be overly critical here but would point out that there was apparently a Benning for Brown trade on the table. May be able to make it happen without the extra team or picks.
