So basically it’s Marner, Kapanen, 3 bottom players and since the picks will be high picks they are like 2 seconds and a third. No thanks.

Nah. Leafs keep Marner and Rielly. No point in making an offer for McDavid when we already have 2 #1 centres. And moving Rielly is moving our only legitimate top pair d-man.. easy pass.

Rielly has more value to leafs than McDavid because Leafs already JT and Matthews, and Rielly is probably the 5th best Defencemen under the age of 25. Leafs don’t have a lot in the backend right now.

I get that the Leafs don’t want to move Marner or Reilly, I was adjusting the trade proposed above to suit a deal of more EQUAL value then the one he proposed

Is it though? ... McDavid is McDavid. We all know that. & I agree the price probably starts with Marner (even over Matthews).. but is the difference between Marner and McDavid REALLY a legit #1 d-man and a 1st? I think you're probably more looking at something like Marner, Kadri, Sandin, and a 1st rounder (maybe 2) for McDavid, and a couple other pieces

Let’s agree to disagree. EDM doesn’t move McDavid for a D prospect (who hasn’t played an NHL game), a late first rounder (#25-28 OA) and Kadri lol. They need minimum stud forward, stud Dman + another piece

I'm not saying that's not his value. But what team would give that up? They'd be setting themselves up just like Edmonton is now. The Oilers have proven that you can't win without a stud d-man, doesn't matter if you have the best player in the world, Sandin is as close to a sure thing as you can get, a prospect like that would be key to coming back because he's low cost controlled for multiple years. Marner would be the stud going back. He had some chemistry with Kadri so it gives them a line to start with. Then if Edmonton could actually draft well the 1st cab still be valuable, they just suck at drafting and development. Plus the possibility of another 1st gives you possibly 5 NHLers for 1.. it's not as bad as you think

There is no chance you can confidently say Sandin will project to be a stud top pairing D man with ZERO NHL games played

No he’s not. Matthews is a goal scoring centre. I’ll take that over a playmaking winger. Centre is a much more difficult/ demanding position than wing so I’ll always take a similar centre over a similar winger. I’d say as of today the best leafs are:

Tavares > Matthews > Marner

smh... it's not all about what position a player plays that just makes him "better" .. Marner is better defensively than both of Matthews and Tavares. Marner is a better skater than both of them. Marner is smarter than both of them. Marner makes his teammates better more than Tavares or Matthews. ... Marner is better. Just because Tavares and Matthews play centre doesn't mean a whole lot. That's like saying Sean Monahan is better than Johnny Gaudreau just because Monahan is a goal scoring centre.

Marner is better.

I said when players are close I’ll take a centre. Gaudreau and Monahan aren’t close.
Marner makes everyone better? Chances are if Tavares never left Long Island marner wouldn’t be having NEARLY as good of a season as he is.
Marner is certainly not better than Tavares defensively. He’s gonna get selke votes this year. Tavares plays a very underrated 200 foot game.
Marner career stats: 222 points in 239 games, 66 goals
Matthews career stats: 204 points in 210 games, 111 goals.

This isn’t a diss on marner. The fact that he’s the leafs 3rd best forward is incredible. He’s obviously an elite player, but I’ll take tavares and Matthews over him.

1. Realistically, I think any potential McDavid trade is 2-3years away. He'll give whoever the new management team is some time to build a competitive team before asking for a trade (if he ever does).

2. If he does ask for a trade, it means the Oilers have gone thru another few seasons without the playoffs...and I think a return would look for like a massive package of futures vs for other established stars. Something like 2 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 top prospects and maybe even another piece that carries a bit of a cap hit. Have to imagine any trade of McDavid is the start of a tear-down and rebuild

3. For what it's worth, I think Matthews is better than Marner but Marner is more valuable to the leafs...if that makes sense. Marner has been on this scoring pace since Jan. 2018...so yes, Tavares has helped..but not as much as some may think.
