Why would we trade Hall and Vatanen? These are key guys and we are not going into a rebuild.

Both pending UFA's I was seeking a maximized return considering they could walk for nothing, whether or not you're a contender or rebuilder doesn't matter they could still walk.

Trades are bad but you nailed the plan with Kapanen. That's exactly what I see the Devils doing this offseason.
