Despite having McDavid, don't know how it makes the Leafs better. Lucic and McDavid in exchange for Matthews and Johnsson add 4 m in cap which the Leafs can't afford. (Leafs are already 6 or 7 m over cap) Sure Zaitsev and Rosen saves the Leafs 5.25m, but those two are projected to starting NHL Dman and how to do they get replaced ? As we have seen even a team with McDavid without good depth behind him isn't a good team.

While Leafs fans often over value their players, I think this is generally right. I think the trade is probably on the high side of fair value for McD, I don’t think Leafs get any better and the Lucic contract is gawd awful.

I agree but why not look at the same as most do with Zaitzev. Bigger cap dump but I think a year less. Would take lots of tinkering but was looking at what it would take for oilers leaf trade to happen.

Well Lucic has a NMC (assuming he waives for the trade). I believe he also has to be protected for the expansion draft.

I understand that the Leaf need cap relief, I think it's about 6.5m over cap with their RFAs signed. But despite the rumours on CapFriendly Zaitsev isn't really a cap dump. He plays big minutes for the Leafs at 4.5m. Admitting he is a tough trade without taking similar money back. IMO even if were to happen, McDavid to the Leafs is a bad fit. Both teams need cap relief.. And don't believe the Oilers were ever trade McDavid to a Leafs as they the Leafs show up on Alberta TV at least twice a week.
Don't think McDavid would ever be traded....well at least for few years, but if he was, my opinion is the Flyers would be a good fit. They have cap so they don't have send 12.5m back in a trade, and they have prospects, and players on ELC which the Oilers would be find desirable. And McDavid would probably the Flyers into playoffs and maybe more.

Regarding NMC for the draft. Players have the option of waiving their NMCs. I gotta believe Lucic would waive his NMC as it would allow his team....the Oilers to be better by protecting another player. And what the chances of Seattle wasting a selection on a 6m cap hit?

Possible that he waives, but don’t think it’s likely. I don’t think players see it that way. I do agree that it’s unlikely that Seattle takes him, but that’s not the issue. If he takes a protected spot, it frees another player to be taken
