Description

Yes - this is unlikely - but if it was going tho happen where Brady was traded from Ottawa this might make it work. Ottawa gets an elite centre / winger in Nylander and dumps their dead weight contracts (which don’t cost cap but due cost money). Toronto has to throw in a first because they don’t want to retain salary. Dermott adds D depth they can build (or trade next year for more prospects). DeMelo for Zaitsev gives some salary balance and brings Ottawa a puck moving D while Toronto gets a steady 3rd line RHD. Tkachuk can play with Tavares or Matthews and bring some grit missing since JVR left Toronto.

Why doesn’t it happen - Ottawa loves their 4th overall pick from 2018 - a pick they kept and gave a lottery pick to Colorado. Nylander had a down year but should be capable of 60-80 pts a year - something Ottawa lacks since trading Duchene and Stone.

Not saying Nylander is elite, but that is overpayment for Nylander. Nylander+Dermott+1st for Tkachuk? No thanks.. Zaitsev and 4th for two cap dumps and DeMelo is fine with me but that is overpayment for Tkachuk. If its Matthew Tkachuk, yes Id do it, not with 1st rounder but I would.

Nylander has 60+ point seasons within term of his ELC which is amazing. Nylander is top-6 playmaker, Tkachuk too, but Tkachuk is clearly better than Willy. Nylander+Dermott+2nd would be fair offer for Matthew Tkachuk. Not saying they would or should do it, But imo thats the value. And Im not saying that they should say yes to OTT deal, Tkachuk is pretty much their leader from now on so it would pretty much be understandable if they say no. Also Toronto and Ottawa except minor moves wont do anything big with each other.

Gaborik and MccArthur have high caps but a pretty low salary for this upcoming season so the Ottawa GM would want to keep them as he saves money and it helps he bad team make it to the cap floor.

Don’t quote me on the low salary but I think that what I read.

Yes - it's an overpayment. To get the trade to happen it would have to be.

The 1st round pick is likely to be very late so it's similar value to a higher second than a genuine top 15.

Ottawa isn't worried about cap as much as payroll costs - LTIR players don't hurt the cap but do cost money.

Ottawa will always be reluctant to trade a star rookie - but this is what I thought it would take.
