yeah because due to him signing at over 35 years old it doesn't go off the books. You'll have to pay a team to take on the cap hit

And pay dearly. No team is in cap floor trouble next year. How many teams want to help the Leafs??? Hey. You just won the Cup. Let me free up 6+ mil in cap space for you so you can get even better. Line forms to the left...

Assuming a cap of 83 and floor of 61.5 mil Ottawa has ~16 mil to get to the floor and 14 players signed. Cecil and White are RFAs. I think Nilsson re-signs. Around 12 mil added and 6 players left to sign.

Spencer, so you know that this is entirely unrealistic right.

Forget the leafs winning the cup part of this......... marleau would have to walk from 6 million dollars and give up his ironman streak, Dubas would have to agree to give up his best RHD + a 1st + a 3rd to just clear cap space, Your plan does not sign Kapanen so I assume you are losing him for draft picks...plus EK would have to agree to a re5urn to Canadian taxes.

From a hockey standpoint you are starting two rookies on the 3rd pairing and asking Dermott in year 2 of his play to switch to the right side on 2nd pairing

Of course EK would be great to have. Maybe if you add a trade of Kadri and Muzzin you can add both Doughty and EK.

From what I understand the floor is usually ~20 mil short of the cap, so 63-83 mil based on projections. Assuming the NHL underestimated the cap by the same amount as last year that could go as high as 64.5-84.5 million.

They will be close, and they do need to ice an NHL roster.

I don't think you understand how easy it is for a team to hit the cap floor.

Getting rid of contracts is much harder.

I tried to do math. Cap this year was 79.5. Floor was 58.8. Came out to ~74%.

At 83 mil floor was 61.5. Add 6 players at 750K. Comes to another 4.5 mil. They hit ~64 mil. Add a little to Ceci or Nilsson and they are at 65. Safely inside without Toronto having to give up top prospects and/or1st rd picks.

Why overpay a guy yourself when you can get an overpaid guy for cheap/get assets to take them?

That's a good point.

One would hope that Ottawa would target players with less term than Zaitsev. I think someone with 1-2 years would be ideal.

Um yes I do know its unrealistic, thats why Im sitting at my computer doing this for fun and not being the real Leafs GM (at the moment).
