Can a team buy out a contract once the season starts?

I'm thinking of a team in the Western Conference, whom I don't want to name, who might have a winger on the roster due to make gazillions for this and several more years, who might want to start the season with this stiff, but decide by December, when he has fewer than 10 points, to finally get rid of him. Can they just buy him out at any time?

Be a real shame if the oilers were in such a situation with Milan Lucic...
