Giving future to Oilers

Created by: Fleurdelille
Team: 2016-17 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2016
Published: Jun. 5, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would love to sign Okposo/Eriksson but being realistic there's no chance Oilers can tie themselves up with the kind of contract they'll be asking for.

The premise is to keep LW as is and let Matt Tkachuk develop for atleast another year. He'll be a star top 2 LW. By the time he has developed it's time to re-sign McDavid, and Pouilot can be dumped for pick or similar. One of the young D gets sent to AHL to get more icetime.

Trades reasoning:
RNH can't be 3rd center behind Draisaitl and McDavid as they develop. Helm is the perfect 3rd C, swayed with a good contract. Obtaining 2 RH Defensemen with fair deals.

Yakupov wants out, will get a 2nd no more no less

Didn't the Preds already trade a RHD for a 1C?
That move doesn't make sense for them. They need to keep cap space for Johansen next year and $2.5mx3 for Ellis is a steal. Plus they don't have another RHD to take Eliis spot.

OK, probably the specifics of that Nuge trade wouldn't work, but your point of trading him somewhere for a top 4 D still seems valid and realistic. The problem I see is that bottom 6 forward group isn't nearly good enough, this team also needs to find some depth somewhere somehow. What if you traded this years 1st to Tor for forward depth (Bozak, Komarov etc.) ... then I think this starts to look like a competitive team.

Doubt if Yak will get a second rounder, well at least a high second rounder like Arizona. Really what has he accomplished? So what if he wants out. A team has to want him. Fayne was put on waivers last year with no takers. Can't see any team that would want him without sending money back to Edmonton. Fayne for Skisa? of Vancouver
I know RNH is 22 years old, but again what has he really accomplished in Edmonton. Do people really want his 6 m contract? Ellis for RHN is OK, but likely the Oilers would have to retain 1.5m to make it work for the Preds.
Brouver and Demers are valued UFAs this season. Doubt if Oilers can get them at market price. Do the OIlers want to overpay like they did for Sekera? Might have to settle for short term vets like Parenteau, Polak and hope your kids develop.

I would think it's unfair to ask what players has accomplished in Edmonton, the club has been mismanaged for a decade and not even McDavid will save it unless things are done. I think 1.5M retained is a good suggestion, something I might have added if I knew how to on this site. I think Preds right now would love youthful center-depth but as mentioned any RH top 4D with similar promise would do.

I read an article that made me think Yaku could go for a 2nd pick. ( http://thehockeywriters.com/what-return-can-the-oilers-expect-in-a-nail-yakupov-trade/ )
He is RFA for 1 year but even if he improves, an extension could very well come cheap. For a team likes Coyotes that is not in cup-final discussions for the next 1-2 years they could definately afford the gamble.

You might be right about the UFAs, they could possibly end up in better clubs. The most important thing right now is to let the talents develop surrounded by decent players, signing veterans instead could definately accomplish that. Not that the offered contracts were unfair, but I suppose both Brouver and Demers might value cup more

I don't think there's a better 3rd C than Darren Helm atm, and Pakarinen has showed grit and toughness in the later half of last season. He may be closer to being a 4th liner though. Still would rather see a veteran or two and securing Tkachuk.

Don't like any of this line up. The Helm and Brouwer signings are terrible. I like both players but the money and term with a declining player would be a a huge mistake. Demers is soft and over rated a player like Luke Schenn would be better. And trading a 60 point C in RNH for a undersized D man the can only put up 30 points terrible.

You are talking about Ellis? You are seriously overestimating the value of RNH if you think you can get a better young two-way RH defenseman (with a superb contract!) for him. Why should your opinion be taken seriously?

I dont know if Nashville trades another D for a center. I think they could use a winger but Ebs for Ellis wont happen from a Nashville prepective siince his cap hit is great
