Trading Nylander to Florida for the 13th Pick Overall

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Florida Panthers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 13, 2019
Published: Apr. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dirty Dangles suggested the structure of a trade by which Toronto exchanges William Nylander for Philadelphia's first-round pick (#11) this June. That got me to thinking about similar possible trades with Minnesota (#12), Florida (#13), and Arizona (#14). This is my idea of what such a trade with the Panthers would look like.

Toronto gets Florida's first-round pick, moves up in the third round, and acquires a young RhD who could play on all three pairings.

Florida gets Nylander, an extra fourth-round pick and a defense prospect.

Florida should pay panarin 3m more than nylander and keep their pick and weeger. looking at this version of nylander, leafs are going to have trouble getting rid of his big cap.

But why are teams jumping to help out TOR? Nylander's trade value as never been lower. I do believe he's a good player, but he's not a prospect anymore and he's never scored more than 61 points. Oh and his 61 points have been on teams with other studs like Matthews/Marner/Tavares/etc...He's had a lot of help getting to the 61 points.

Only way Panthers should do this is if Leafs retain half his salary. He hasn’t been impressive at all, most Leaf fans I have spoken to hate the fact the Dubas publicly stated he won’t trade him.

Yeah, but the second Dubas actually says...Nylander's on the market...his trade value goes down because teams smell blood in the water. To me...just 1 man's opinion...Nylander's on the market if an acquiring team asks, but he isn't being actively and openly shopped.

Leafs definitely wont retain on him if they trade him. They knew he would start slow (they thought 12 games) but after game 15-16 he started to improve. He has picked up a fair amount of points without playing with matthews/tavares/marner. The first 10 games he played around 12 minutes and when there were injuries he played with Marleau and brown who are bad offensively. He has had a few points taken away from him and he has been so unlucky, if he was shooting 9% he would have around 12 goals and 30ish assists which is decent over the amount of games he played.

Hes still 22 and has lots of room to grow, he misses the net a lot. If he works on his accuracy he will score more goals and he is already a very good passer and skater

You think Huberdeau and Barkov are qualitatively inferior to Hyman or Marleau and Matthews or Kadri?

I believe Coach Q was promised two out of three next players Bobrovsky, Panarin, Karlsson as condition they got him to sign.

Also Nylander will be just fine when he will start training camp with others and wont miss 3 months of NHL training drills. Keep him ( young and career rising ) and try to get something for Kadri ( aging and career declining ) while TML can before he hits distribution and lability low.

I'd first say that we need to compare apples to apples. Hubs/Barkov compared to Tavares/Matthews/Marner...Yes Hubs is the clear worst out of those 5...AND...TOR has (3) vs (2). So the short answer is yes...TOR offers more assistance than Florida could hope to give Nylander. (UFAs acquisitions like Panarin aside) Marleau/Hyman shouldn't be in that convo though.

I was responding to the opinion that Nylander's back-to-back 61 point seasons were the result of playing with Toronto's stars (who didn't include Tavares at the time), which I think is false. I think he would be just as good on your first line, as shown.

But the point is that Florida shouldn't HAVE to spend $7M on a player that REQUIRES elite talent on the same line which Nylander does. $7M is for players that can hold their own line. Nylander's proven he can't do that.

That is such a non sequitur that I think this conversation has lost its point.
