He’s saying that you’re giving up way way way too much.

That said, crank up the Marner offer significantly, or reduce the term significantly

The problem is you are asking a team to take on 8+ million in cap(4.25 million for Z and 4 for Kap, for a cost controlled RHD who has progressed over the last 2 years. The 1st round pick will be late 20's, which is nothing special. Yes the Wings traded Tatar for a late 1st, but they cleared out a lot of salary and a playe who I believe no longer fit the system.

I like Kapanen and I would love to see him on Anathanisou's right, but that Zaitsev contract is bad. He is Toronto version of Jonathon Ericsson, a decent defenseman, who at 2-2.5is ok, but at 4.5 is over priced and optics are bad.

With Zaitsev on that trade I'm not giving up Hronek for it.

If the offer sheets were used in the NHL half as much as they are on this site we might just get rid of RFAs all together. Teams would have no consistency at all it would be awful for The NHL and all of the teams. Which is why it is rarely used now.

It has nothing to do with consistency. Offer sheets are rarely used because the compensation is often too much to give up and its rare a team has a cap situation like the Leafs. There only a possibility if the team clearly cant afford to match with there cap situation. If your making an offer sheet just to try and steal a player, your going to have to way overpay for that team not to match and then in that case you just have an overpaid player and its not worth it.

If you open that up every body is fair game where does it stop? Like you said what's stopping Detroit from offering Johnsson or Kapanen? if it only costs a 2nd why do we not see more of it? That type of situation happens all the time where it wouldn't be to expensive to do it but an offer sheet hasn't been signed since 2013? The last successful or unmatched offer sheet was in 2007.

everybody is fair game technically, the offer sheet rules are in the CBA. There no rule that says offer sheets aren't allowed. I am not saying it should happen all the time. It doesn't happen all the time for the reasons i said above. But with that said in my opinion Kap and Johnsson are offer sheet candidates. Because they are in the cap hit range where you could pay them 4 mil and it wouldn't be an big overpayment but at the same time Leafs wouldn't want to match because they are in such a tight cap situation. Its more likely that a player in that range will get an offer sheet than someone giving up 4 first round picks for Brayden Point or Marner.

I forget what game it was but they interviewed Scotty Bowman he even made a comment about an unwritten type of rule that owners and GMs abide by because it would be chaos if teams just sent out offer sheets to who ever.
The interview was a Wings away game and Mickey was there so I think it was at Buffalo.

i saw that interview as well, i don't specifically remember him saying that, i do think your right there is somewhat of a unwritten rule amongst GMs. But in the Leafs situation they have Marner, Kap, Johnsson to sign. They are not going to be able to keep all three of them. So that means they are gonna have to probably trade one of Kap or Johnsson. Because other GMs know they are going to have to make that trade i dont think they are going to be able to get anywhere near market value for Kap or Johnsson anyways. So a offer sheet in that situation where they get a 2nd round pick doesn't feel like its a huge dick move. Or they will trade Nylander and keep Kap and Johnsson, thats what they should do, but that nylander contract is pretty bad. Are you a red wings fan?

Absolutely a Wings fan. I think offer sheets at least on this site are out of control. Since they rarely happen. It's like as soon Nylander signed something had to take it's place and that seems to be ridiculous offer sheet transactions.

yeah its pretty funny cause there most likely won't be one this offseason but you gotta admit that Kapanen offer sheet for the wings would be sick. We need right shooting forwards bad

Do you want to separate Bert - Larkin - Mantha they went off at the end of the season? but I don't think you can put a bad line out with those 6 players.
