If I've learned one thing about the Penguin's coaching its that they can work miracles with defensemen but they can't teach the stupid of the stupid. I honestly don't know much about Zaitsev but as long as he buys into what's being fed to him I'm sure he could be successful in Pittsburgh.

Schultz was great in the cups runs, I thought Gudbranson was excellent down the stretch and through the playoffs, and once Johnson bought into the system he played a fairly solid 2nd half of the season. Nobody is going to say that defense was the issue this year. Maybe defensemen making stupid offensive plays, but 5 guys who played in the playoffs above I thought all played pretty solid.

Yeah Schultz is good but he's always had great skill, just used poorly in Edmonton. Gudbranson had a good first 10 games then went right back to being very bellow average in possession metrics. Johnson has been a tire fire all season, burning extra bright in the playoffs, -3 and 3 bad minors. He had his worst possession stats in the last 6 seasons this year.

Not a single player has improved metrics with Johnson:

So I don't think pens should entertain the idea of taking bad defensemen and hoping they become good. There is no evidence to show that they are good at converting defensemen

I take it you don't watch the games.

JJ played on his off side most of the season. Of Course he didn't play well. You know how hard it is to throw cross rink passes off your backhand?

JJ played fine this year. Both in the regular season while he was on his natural side and the playoffs.
He did take 2 penalties. One of them was kind of BS though. The player ran into him, JJ just sent him flying for doing it.

Lots of troll posters on here don't realize how hard it is to find defense men in this league. There are much worse than JJ. Who was a -20 playing as a RHD but ended up a -4 on the year when switched to the LHD, a +16 difference. Go ask these teams with defensemen who are finishing the year -40 to -30 how much they wish they had better defensemen.
Players like Maatta and JJ will find homes if they decide to trade them. It won't be hard.

Well said. People just wrote off JJ and Gudbranson as hopeless and never really followed up to watch their play. Penguins were a much better team defensively post trade deadline then they have been in quite sometime. As the result from the Isles series show, the guys on our backend who made mistakes were 100% not the guys GM JR added this year.

Did you only watch the play behind his own net? Have you seen him try to break out, or get beat by speedy forwards or try to manage the puck on the blue line?

Yeah it sucks and you're asking a lot but at the end of the day he still didn't perform

No data can show that he played well. He took 3 in 3 games, one was iffy

You can't say that some bottom teams would be happy to have Johnson play in their top 4 to defend his role on Pittsburgh. You just signed a 3rd pairing D (for a top team) when he's out of his prime for way too much money. If Johnson was playing 13-14 minutes at 2 mill on the bottom pairing we wouldn't have this convo. That's why I don't like to harp on Gudbranson too much, yeah he's not a game changer and makes too much money but the trade made sense at the time and he was brought in to play 13-14 minutes. I just think that no NHL team will win a cup with Jack Johnson playin 20 minutes a night, he's just way too much on the wrong side of the puck. It's not personal, I'm sure he's a great guy but you can't point at any data that says he's good for the team either than, hey I saw him check that guy hard or he made a good dive to stop the breakaway of the guy who just walked around him

It was Letang (mostly) and Dumoulin being terrible for the most part. Now Gudbranson was pretty good honestly.
